Des Moines Register 05-06-07 Grassroots Dedication ceremony set for swine center The Lauren Christian Swine Research Center at Iowa State University's Bilsland Memorial Farm near Madrid will be dedicated at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Christian, who died in 1998, was a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture in animal science and an ISU animal science faculty member for 33 years. He was an internationally recognized expert in swine genetics, a wellknown teacher and the first director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center at ISU. An open house and tour of the new Baird Swine Breeding and Gestation Facility will follow the dedication. State youth program extends deadline The registration deadline for the Iowa Agricultural Youth Institute has been extended to Friday. Space is still available in the program, which is for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The conference will be held June 11-14 on the Iowa State University campus. ISU agriculture students win national contests Iowa State University agricultural students won three national contests last month. A team of ISU agronomy students won the Ag Knowledge Quiz Bowl and the Ag Computers Contest and placed second in the Crops Contest at the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture competition in Hutchinson, Kan. Raechel Baumgartner won first place in the Ag Computers Contest, finished first in the Ag Computers knowledge exam and was second in Crops Contest lab. Michael Schrum, a senior from Grand Junction, was first in applications of the Ag Computers Contest. Also, ISU students finished first in the 2007 American Society of Agronomy National Collegiate Soil Judging Contest at Utah State University. Nick Ihde, a junior in agricultural business from Prairie du Chien, Wis., was the first-place individual overall. Jana Matthiesen, a senior in agricultural studies from Bryant, finished sixth. Soybean scholarships given to eight students The Iowa Soybean Association has awarded $2,000 scholarships to eight Iowa high school seniors. They are William Davenport of Thayer, Mary Foell of Schaller, Jacob Hunter of De Witt, Elizabeth Juchems of Plainfield, Megan Kregel of Guttenberg, Cameron Luedtke of Marion, Brad McDonald of Hopkinton and Blake Woebbeking of Gladbrook.
