Agri News, MN 09-26-06 Iowa news and notes Extension Service hires Holz-Clause AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa Extension Service will see personnel changes this winter. Michael Quart, Extension associate vice president, has been named vice provost for university Extension and director of cooperative Extension at the University of Missouri-Columbia, effective Dec. 1. Mary Holz-Clause, manager of ISU's Valued Added Agriculture program and director of the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, has appointed interim director of the positions. Food, Farm Coalition starts strategic plan The Northeast Iowa Food and Farm Coalition has formed to begin implementation of the strategic plan designed to build a stronger local food and farm economy in northeast Iowa. The coalition's mission is to support the development and marketing of locally grown agriculture products ro enhance the lives of local citizens. The coalition has three primary goals -- provide the opportunity for existing and new producers to diversify; explore the development of regional processing and storage facilities to add value to all agricultural products in the area; and increase sales consumption of locally grown food on a local, regional and national level. Thoreson to discuss carcass results Oct. 4 NEW HAMPTON, Iowa -- Iowa State University Extension livestock specialist Dale Thoreson will review and explain the information obtained from the market steers and heifers that were scanned during the Chickasaw County Achievement Show back in July during an Oct. 4 meeting. The meeting will be Oct. 4, starting at 7 p.m. in the Extension office in New Hampton. Information from the 10 animals will be compared and contrasted to the live photos and the actual value of the marketable carcass. Forestry Field Day planned at Yellow River WATERVILLE, Iowa -- Northeast Iowans interested in learning more about woodland resources should attend a Forestry Field Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 3 at Yellow River State Forest near Waterville. Topics covered in the morning session include prescribed burning for oak management and forest management for migratory birds. During lunch, district foresters will talk about emerald ash borer and the future of ash in Iowa. The afternoon session will focus on fish habitat and stream management followed by a discussion of walnut pruning and release. The program is sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
