Richmond Times Dispatch July 18, 2006 Tuesday _Final Edition BUSINESS; Pg. B-9 Tech professor leads vaccine development BLACKSBURG - A Virginia Tech professor, Dr. X.J. Meng, has developed a vaccine for a virus that has been blamed for immune-system problems in pigs. Fort Dodge Animal Health, a manufacturer and distributor of animal-health products, recently received full licensure for the vaccine, Suvaxyn PCV2 One Dose. It went on the market late last month. Research to develop the vaccine, a joint project of Tech, Iowa State University and Fort Dodge Animal Health, began more than six years ago. Meng, assistant professor at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine's department of biomedical sciences and pathology, headed a team at Tech to develop the vaccine. Iowa State researchers then conducted several studies on pigs at its veterinary college.
