He told a crowd of about 200 that Democrats need to shift the national debate away from terrorism and back to domestic issues. He said the health care system is too expensive and inefficient, and the economy is too reliant on other countries. Daschle, a South Dakota resident, served in Congress for 26 years, 10 years as Senate Democratic leader. He was defeated by Republican John Thune in a heated 2004 campaign. Daschle said he has no plans to run for president. Also during his visit, Daschle endorsed Secretary of State Chet Culver's bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Daschle said Culver is a strong advocate for ethanol and is in the best position to win.
