Federal and state financial aid regulations require that a student maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) towards
degree completion in order to receive financial aid. If you are denied financial aid at UW-Stout due to not meeting SAP
for a cumulative GPA less than 2.0 or for not successfully completing 67% of all attempted courses, you need to appeal
to have your eligibility for financial aid reinstated.
Instructions on How To Appeal: in your written statements below, you must state what specifically caused
you to not meet the SAP standards and how you will address the issues going forward:
1. In the space below, explain why you did not make satisfactory academic progress: What factors or specific
circumstances precluded you from not making satisfactory progress?
2. What has changed, or how are you planning to improve and ensure that you progress toward your degree?
Include your plans regarding your future enrollment: full-time, ¾-time, half-time, or less-than-half-time.
Intentions of good will, such as “I will try harder” or “I will do better” are not sufficient.
3. Provide any documentation to support the circumstances you talked about in #1. For example: doctor’s note,
obituary, divorce decree, etc. Submit this appeal form and any documentation to the Financial Aid Office.
Appeals must be submitted and approved prior to the end of the semester for which you are appealing to
receive aid. Email, fax, mail, or hand in your appeal to the Financial Aid Office for review (use the email address,
fax number, or mailing address below).
4. You will be notified regarding the status of your appeal via your UW-Stout email address. If approved, your
financial aid counselor may stipulate specific criteria to be met, such as earning a minimum GPA per semester,
number of credits to be taken each semester, and/or satisfactory completion of all classes (no withdrawals or
incompletes) to continue to be eligible to receive financial aid.
5. Failure to meet the requirements outlined by the financial aid counselor can result in a loss of aid until you are
meeting the satisfactory academic progress standard for GPA and/or 67% completion.
