ISSUE 06 March 2010 NTLC Reports Nakatani Teaching & Learning Center at UW-Stout NTLC Community of Practice… A Community of Practice (CoP) is a collaborative, year-long program focusing on enhancing teaching, learning and related research. The CoP creates a supportive environment and conducts work that leads to results that other university professionals can use. Featured CoPs: “Engaging Student Voices to Enrich Learning” Facilitator - Anne Hoel (hoela@uwstout.edu) NTLC Vision Statement . . . The Nakatani Teaching and Learning Center nourishes a campus culture of learning and teaching characterized by discovery, curiosity, innovation, collaboration and research. NTLC Mission Statement . . . The mission of the Nakatani Teaching and Learning Center is to share and value teaching and learning. Programs sponsored by the NTLC will especially support the University’s priorities, its Enduring Goals, and the mission of the NTLC. Participants research and discuss theories, resources, and practices relating to collaborative teaching and learning. The goal is to acknowledge the value of both teacher and learner experiences, and to highlight ways this collaborative effort enhances learning. According to Hoel, “we are trying to make students a partner in the learning process.” During spring semester 2010 participants are facilitating students’ various inquiry activities in order to foster an awareness of the inquiry process of learning and to enhance their abilities in posing critical questions which prompt discussion. “Using Lesson Study to Collaboratively Implement Reflective Teaching” Facilitator - Joy Becker (beckerjoy@uwstout.edu) Participants explore the Lesson Study process, review teaching/learning research, and create an action plan for implementing the process with a team, with the goal of evaluating and improving student learning. Members are currently facilitating their own lesson study teams. Projects to investigate student learning in computer science, mathematics, and industrial management are being conducted in several classes this semester. Results, tips and resources for conducting your own lesson study project will be shared at the NTLC MayDay, on May 24th, 2010. Reconciling the emotional demands of creating a family and creating a career, especially in the pre-tenure years, requires careful time management, insightful planning, and superb endurance. At its latest meeting, the Mother and Academic Sharing Community discussed separating the professional and the personal for mothers and questioned when and where the two could blend. Also discussed was Joanne S. Frye's essay on "Making a Living, Making a Life," which touches on topics like gender equity at work.
