Standards Review Progress Update NC High School Mathematics 2015-16 Math I, II, & III Review and Revision Cycle Timeframe & Description of Action Details of Action January 2016 Comments from teacher surveys, community surveys, teacher focus groups, and Academic Standards Review Commission’s final report are assembled and copied in preparation for data review team work. Material Preparations Group Invitation February 4-5 and March 4-5, 2016 Data Analysis/Review Group Meetings March 9-20, 2016 Revision and Rewriting Process Preparation Team of 23 educators (composed of ten teachers, seven district math leaders and six professors from NC Colleges) from across the state convened in Raleigh to conduct a thorough analysis of all feedback as a part of the Data Analysis/Review component of the Standards Review Process. Business and industry were represented through Chamber of Commerce who sent two representatives to address the group and sit in on part of the process. Data Review Team duties: 1) Read through all data by standard across all three high school courses 2) Identify common themes and record 3) Apply professional input based on comments 4) Reach small group consensus on whether to keep standard, revise, remove or move & revise 5) Reach large group consensus by standard and course 6) Develop guidelines for revision work Invitations issued to members of Data Review Team to begin the revision and rewriting phase. Summary documents prepared for distribution to team members. Teams formed by conceptual category and will then regroup by course. Invitees include 7 teachers, 4 district/state leaders, and 4 higher-education representatives. Western, Central and Eastern regions of NC are represented. March 21 – April 15, 2016 Revise & Rewrite Writing teams meet virtually and in-person to apply recommendations of the Data Review Team. These recommendations include overarching guidance such as: 1) Examine and rewrite all standards for clarity by removing unnecessary language and examples. * 2) Move Geometry standards according to topic. 3) Delete/Move identified standards to fourth math courses. 4) Limit overly broad standards by rewriting with clearer direction for teachers based on the identification of functions and systems per course. * 5) Remove identified standards that span 2 or 3 courses that were viewed as duplicative and unnecessary. * A first draft will be produced at the conclusion of a 1-2 day meeting in Greensboro – Date TBD depending on the progress of the work. April 18 – April 26, 2016 Public Review of Draft April 26 – May 3, 2016 Draft Feedback Summary May 4-5, 2016 June 1-2, 2016 State Board of Education Communication with LEAs regarding upcoming public comment period. Draft of revised high school math courses made public for comment and posted to eBoard for SBE. Prepare feedback on drafts of revised courses in anticipation of SBE presentation. Note any revisions needed and apply. SBE presentation of revised draft for discussion. Vote on adoption of revised high school math courses. June 6 – July 30, 2016 Regional meetings with high school math teachers and district leaders across the state to communicate and District & Teacher Training begin training under new standards using statewide system of support and service. * Recommended by or contained in final report of the Academic Standards Review Commission
