Ways to Use
Phones to
Personalize
Learning
● Collaboration and Choice
○ Students and teachers can work
together seamlessly on assignments of
choice.
● Research
○ Increase student inquiry skills and
content knowledge.
● Formative Assessment
○ Quickly pinpoint student strengths and
weaknesses.
● Student Engagement
○ Students are comfortable on their own
device and ready to dive into learning.

WAYS NOT
TO USE
PHONES
Don’t forget about Digital Citizenship. This is a crucial part
of a successful BYOD classroom. Students must
understand they are responsible for their actions on their
device and how to stay safe online.
Don’t ask them to use an app that is platform specific if
there isn’t an app in both google play and itunes you should
keep looking.
Don’t expect them to use their data plan for work assigned
in class, you might even encourage them to turn off their
data while in class (in our district being on the school
network, insures you are filtered)
Don’t allow students to use their phones freely for a
reward or flexible time. The phone should be viewed as a
tool for learning in your classroom.

Use Your
Phone for
Assessments
Quizizz: an
assessment tool that
provides immediate
feedback.
Assessment
questions are shown
on their screen and
they can work
independently.
Nearpod: a tool for
sharing an interactive
presentation to each
student’s device. The
teacher controls
when the content is
released. You can
have 10 nearpods
with a free account.

Use Your
Phone for
Student
Input
AWWAP allows you
to share a
whiteboard with
your students everyone can write
to the shared space.
Easy to save work
as an image to
submit or add to a
digital portfolio.
Built in Recorders
for phones allow
students to record
their responses and
email or send them
to you via google
classroom
15
Use Your Phone
for Collaboration
Thinkbinder:
Create interactive
private group study
spaces for students
to chat, share links,
and maintain a
group calendar.
Google suite of apps
especially Google
Classroom can allow
phones to become a
collaborative
workspace for any
project. Students can
prepare and submit
work easily on their
devices.
