COURSE DESCRIPTION AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES
CRP 595 is the capstone experience of the GIS graduate certificate. Students will attend weekly seminars and
discuss current GIS applications and research from multiple disciplines. Students taking CRP 595 are expected
to be completing their GIS application (independent study) under the direction of a faculty advisor. Each GIS
Certificate candidate will give an oral presentation on their GIS application project (using a PowerPoint slide
presentation).
Overall, CRP 595 is designed to accomplish the following objectives:
1. Introduce students to the work of professionals who use GIS in their research or job.
2. Stimulate meaningful discussions about the application of GIS to contemporary research problems.
3. Provide students a formal opportunity to present and receive feedback on their GIS application projects.
4. Allow students to develop and demonstrate effective oral, visual, and written communication skills.
GRADING
Student performance will be evaluated as Satisfactory or Fail based on participation in weekly seminars and
delivery of a final presentation. Each student can only miss on day of class during the whole semester.
Attendance is a basic expectation. In addition to showing up for every seminar, students are expected to
actively listen, ask questions, and complete a hand or type written summary of each presentation. Students
will deliver a final presentation of their GIS application (independent study) project. Coming late, leaving
early, and using computer during presentations are signs of disrespect towards your peers, your professor, and
speakers, and they will not be tolerated.
