Grading: Homework on MyLabsPlus, 10 quizzes during recitation
sessions, 2 tests and 1 final exam. The points are distributed as
follows: 15% for the homework on MyLabsPlus, 20% for the quizzes,
20% for each test and 25% for the final. The course grade will be
based on the overall percentage. The specific cutoff points for the
grades depend on many factors but it usually won't deviate a lot from
the following scale:
%
92% 88% 84% 80% 75% 70% 65% 60% 57% 53% 50% <50%
Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D D- F
The grade for the course will also be posted after the final exam.
Homework: Online homework will be assigned on MyLabsPlus
(MLP). Students are expected to do the homework on a daily basis and
finish by the due date. Since computer problems do occur, you
should NOT WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTES to do your
homework. Having problem with the computer at the last minute is
NOT a valid reason for missing the deadline. Homework for Section
16.7 and 16.8 will be due on 4/27 (in the last week of classes). There
are 3 attempts for each question in the homework. In addition to the
homework on MyLabsPlus, students SHOULD PRACTICE
WRITING OUT THE DETAILS OF THE ANSWERS, which is
REQUIRED in all quizzes, tests and final exam.
Quizzes: There are 10 quizzes to be taken during recitation sessions.
The problems in each quiz will be taken from the sections covered in
the previous week. The lowest quizz score will be dropped before the
final grade for the course is calculated.
Tests and Final Exam: The two tests are tentatively scheduled on
2/20 and 4/8. Details of the tests and final exam will be announced in
the lectures and posted on the course homepage. All communication
devices, e.g. cell phones, ipods, ipads, tablets and laptops must be
turned off during tests and exams.
Calculators: Although graphing calculators can be used in this
course, you are required to show your work in your assignments and
exams. Answers without work will not get any credit.
Disability Resources: Special help is available for students who have
learning disability.
Changes: Changes to this syllabus will be announced in lectures and
posted on the web. Check this syllabus regularly for any update.
