Our newly redesigned, state-of-the-art laboratories give you the hands-on, real world experience you need for many high-demand careers. Our programs last anywhere from nine months to two years, depending on the type of degree you’re pursuing, which means you can learn your skills and enter the workforce quickly .

Kirkwood is designated as one of only 45 Toyota T-TEN

(Technician Training Education Network) schools in the nation and the only such school in Iowa. Kirkwood partnered with Snap-on tools to become one of only 18 certification training centers in the nation , as well as partnering with the Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling

Contractors Association to develop curriculum.

Plus, we have scholarships for everyone, including more than

Engineering Technologies

Energy Production & Distribution Technologies

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Windmill technician, boiler operator, boiler technician

Help power the future! You’ll learn about complex mechanical/ electrical systems, including megawatt windmills, steam driven turbines and solar fields that turn sunlight into electricity.

Automation and Instumentation Technologies

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Industry robotics, factory automation

Prepare yourself for a broad range of careers in the industrial automation and processor control sector of the industry through industry-guided curriculum and hands-on labs. As a graduate of this program, you’ll have experience in a broad range of technologies and processes that ensure you are well-rounded technically and have the foundational knowledge and versatile skill set necessary to continue to learn and succeed in industry today.

Industrial Maintenance Technology

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Maintenance technician, electrician

Get extensive training on electricity and electro mechanical devices such as motors, generators and transformers, as well as electrical wiring, basic electronics, refrigeration, air conditioning, computer applications and industrial hydraulics.

Graduates of this program can go on to complete a four-year degree at UNI, or qualify for advanced placement in the apprenticeship program of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Automotive Collision Repair

1-year diploma | Potential Careers: Collision repair specialist, claims adjuster

Learn how to restore a damaged vehicle to “like new” condition, from start to finish. Analyze, repair, replace and refinish damaged panels and vehicles in our state-of-the-art facility.

Automotive Technology

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Automotive technician, service writer

Learn the latest theory, diagnostics and repair of today’s automotive industry, plus become a Toyota/Lexus and Snap-on certified technician.

Telecommunications Technology

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Fiber optics installer, network management technician

Learn how to install, provision, test and troubleshoot circuits ranging from simple phone lines to high speed optical fiber circuits. You will also study access technologies used in cell phones, high speed Internet and wireless communication.

One of the highlights of this program is the live server telecommunications lab which provides hands-on training for students.

Electronics Engineering Technology

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Avionics technician, electronics test technician

Design, test, analyze, operate and troubleshoot complex electronic systems. Rockwell Collins, Skyworks Solutions and

RF Micro Devices are three of the many local companies that employ graduates of this program.

CAD/Mechanical Engineering Technology

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Engineering technician, CAD operator

Hit the ground running with employable skills and the potential to advance to designer status in mechanical engineering. Learn the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and three popular CAD software packages. Good algebra and basic problem solving skills are a prerequisite to our program.

Carpentry

9-month diploma | Potential Careers: Residential or commercial carpenter

Get an intensive hands-on introduction to the skills used by carpenters. The classroom experience combines lecture and lab activities that cover all aspects of a carpenter’s job. After you complete this program, you can continue your education and earn an AAS degree in our Construction Management program.

Plumbing Technology

1-year diploma | Potential Careers: Plumbing installation, service technician

Get the skills you need to become a plumbing apprentice.

Learn about piping materials, pipe joining methods, construction safety, plumbing system designs, installations and job site communications.

The Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors Association assisted the college in developing the curriculum to meet the needs of this challenging and rewarding career field.

HVAC Installer

9-month diploma | Potential Careers: HVAC installer, sales and service

Prepare to enter the skilled trade of heating, ventilation and air conditioning installation. Focus on residential and light commercial equipment, installation procedures, code requirements, electrical applications and refrigerant handling procedures. This nine-month, hands-on program also includes system design and HVAC component operation.

NCCER HVAC Level 1 Certification, NCCER Electrical

Level 1 Certification.

Architectural Technology

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: CAD technician, designer

Prepare for a career as a CAD technician in an architect’s or engineer’s office. You’ll use a variety of CAD programs to prepare architectural drawings for residential and commercial buildings, learn to sketch freehand, read blueprints, and use surveying and construction tools.

Construction Management

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Project manager, construction estimator

Learn to lead a team in planning, executing and controlling construction projects. Build your future by learning practical management skills that apply to many different careers.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: CNC operator, tool and die maker

Modern manufacturing utilizes CNC machining to produce everything from automobiles to aircraft and other products used in our daily lives. You will learn how to operate high-tech equipment such as lasers, milling machines and abrasive waterjets that are controlled with CNC.

Welding

2-year AAS degree or 1 semester diploma | Potential

Careers: Production welder, welding fabrication

Put into practice basic and advanced welding techniques as you build on high-demand fabrication skills. Graduates of this program can transfer to the University of Northern Iowa to pursue a bachelor of arts in technology management. Kirkwood became an American Welding Society Accredited Test Facility for certifying welder in March of 2014.

Water Environmental Technology Online

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Wastewater treatment

This two-year degree includes technical study in water/ wastewater procedures, complemented by math, science, social science and humanities classes, as well as an internship.

Graduates of this program work in municipal water and wastewater treatment plants and the collection systems and distribution systems that serve them. Graduates may become certified in one of four grade levels depending on the size of the community served and the complexity of the treatment.

Diesel Ag Technology

2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Service technician, safety inspector

Prepare for entry-level employment or job advancement in fields related to the repair and maintenance of farm equipment and other diesel-powered heavy equipment.

Diesel Truck Technology

17-month AAS degree | Potential Careers: Shop foreman, service manager

Find entry-level employment or job advancement in fields related to the repair and maintenance of diesel trucks and other diesel-powered equipment. This comprehensive program stresses skill development, theoretical knowledge, applications and leadership skills providing graduates with many options for employment.

Because they’re continuing education, you don’t earn college credit for the classes, but you can earn valuable certifications in a short amount of time.

Auto Body Repair Certificate

Learn the essential skills and knowledge to repair dents and rust, including final painting. Classes include: Repair

Dings, Dents and Rust; Prime and Paint; and Auto Body

Repair Advanced.

Class A Truck Driver Training

No other job offers the freedom, stability and rewards that you’ll experience as a driver. And there’s no better place to start your training than at Kirkwood Community College, where you can get your commercial driver’s license in just four short weeks! We’ll help you find full-time employment with interstate trucking companies that hire our graduates directly out of the course.

Class B CDL Training

This program is for anyone 18 years of age or older. To get a

Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, you will utilize the

Kirkwood Community College bus to train and test for your license. After completion of the class, you will be able to drive a tour bus or straight truck.

Combination Welder Certificate

Learn the essential skills and knowledge required to become a combination welder. By enrolling in Kirkwood’s Combination

Welder Certificate program, you will receive instruction in all position welding in the areas of stick welding, MIG welding,

TIG welding, AWS welder qualification prep and structural blueprint reading.

Computer Aided Designer Certificate

Learn the essential skills and knowledge required to become a computer aided drafter/designer. By registering for this

Kirkwood program, you will earn a certificate that will document your design skills.

Computerized Machining Operator Certificate

Learn the essential skills and knowledge required to become a computerized machining center operator. By registering for this Kirkwood program, you will earn a certificate that will document your advanced machining skills.

Electrical Specialist Certificate

Learn the essential skills and knowledge required to become an electrical specialist. By registering for this Kirkwood program, you will earn a certificate that will document your electrical skills abilities.

Forklift Certification

This class includes a classroom presentation, hands-on training and testing in various types of lifts, power lifts, lifttruck operations and inspection of lift trucks. Participants receive certification meeting OSHA requirements upon successful completion. Participants must be 18 years old to take this course.

Specialist Certificate

The Lean Process Improvement Specialist Certificate program will provide you with a common base of knowledge and tools essential to understand lean projects and improve your career success.
