Is there a list of recommended reading?
Yes – for further information please contact: international@ucles.org.uk
To what extent do candidates need to be able to distinguish between the Matthew/Mark
and Luke variations of accounts?
It is rare for the question paper to ask for comparisons of Matthew/Mark/Luke accounts,
although such a question has been asked in the past about the resurrection. If a question
asks about the calling of the apostles in general, then it does not matter whether candidates
refer to Matthew, Mark or Luke. However, if a question asks for the Luke account of a
particular event, then they need to give the Luke account.
One Principal Examiner’s Report referred to confusion amongst candidates. Can you
explain?
Examiners have noticed that there is sometimes confusion amongst candidates surrounding
different miracles/events, and that they get these mixed up, especially healing miracles. For
example, a question might refer to the healing of the blind man, but candidates might wrongly
give an account of a different healing story.
Is there a common error that candidates make?
Some candidates wrongly answer both bible versions of Question 1 – the Revised Standard
Version and the New English Bible version, whereas they only need to answer one version.
Will there be any changes to the syllabus?
·
In the 2004 examinations (May/June and October/November), there will be a slightly
revised scheme of assessment for question 1 (the compulsory context question): 28
marks (not 30 marks) will be assigned to question 1, and candidates will be required to
choose 4 passages (not 5) out of 7 passages (not 9). There will be 7 marks (not 6) for
each passage.
·
This syllabus, along with syllabus 2041, will be examined for the last time in
October/November 2004. They will be replaced by a new syllabus (2048). The new
syllabus, which will be examined for the first time in May/June 2005, and then in
October/November 2005, will consist of two compulsory examination papers. Each
paper will be on both the life and teaching of Jesus according to the Gospel of Luke and
on the origins of the early church as recorded in Acts 1-21:15.
