Cooperative Education at UW-Stout
Cooperative education at the University of Wisconsin-Stout
is part of a nationwide college program that integrates careerrelated work experience with academic course work. The
co-op program supports UW-Stout’s polytechnic designation
by providing students the opportunity to experience an active and applied focus on learning in their professional field.
The success of the co-op program is based on a framework
of collaborative partnerships between employers, students
and the university.
UW-Stout’s Cooperative Education program is centrally
coordinated through the Career Services Office in cooperation with the academic departments of the university. Faculty
provided support and mentorship for the 954 students enrolled in the co-op program during 2013–2014. Employers
have also shown steady support for the program, with more
than 520 employers providing job sites.
This report details the success of UW-Stout’s Cooperative
Education program in 2013–2014. It provides data from a
survey of cooperative education students, providing several
measures of strength. Students who participated in the
co-op program at UW-Stout reported average earnings of
$13.69 per hour while on co-op assignments. Wages paid to
2013–2014 co-op students totaled more than $8.8 million.

Company Supervisor: Nick David
Faculty Mentor: Robert Meisner
Co-op Company: NewPage Corporation
Company Supervisor: Nick Chernick
Faculty Mentor: Laura Schmidt
Student: “My Co-op experience was truly an outstanding experience. I was
blessed to have had many challenges to overcome during my Co-op. I
was able to show Skybridge that I am a valuable employee. I had the
chance to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to many realistic job
situations. Ultimately, I was able to maximize my strengths and grow as
a professional.”
Student: “My co-op exposed me to experiences that I could not have attained in the classroom setting. While at PepsiCo, I was treated like any
other full-time employee. I managed my own projects, was expected to
meet project deadlines and was responsible for all cross functional team
communication. All in all, my co-op experience with PepsiCo helped
prepare me for my future.”
Student: “This co-op was a rewarding, fantastic, exciting and a meaningful educational experience. This experience allowed me to expand my
knowledge in the field of computer science and also helped me to develop
essential skills necessary for the professional work environment. This
co-op inspired me greatly; as a result, I have decided to add another
concentration in Software Development.”
Employer: “It was a pleasure to have Veronica at our company. She accomplished much more than what is typically required in a standard co-op
position. Veronica took on a highly visible leadership role and managed
high level projects and responsibilities almost immediately. We were
impressed with her work ethic and ability to interact well with employees
at all levels of the organization. She is a motivated, self-starter with the
ability to hit the ground running. Veronica will be a tremendous asset to
any employer fortunate enough to hire her!”
Employer: “It was a pleasure to work with Sydney during her six-month coop position. I was very impressed with her skills as Packaging Engineer,
especially her ability to present technical information to senior leaders.
She is an impressive Packaging Engineer who is reliable, trustworthy
and a hardworking.”
Employer: “When Nischal joined our staff he quickly integrated himself into
our team and not only produced results on the projects he was assigned,
but also provided valuable insight on a variety of topics throughout his
time at NewPage. Nischal brought a new, fresh perspective to a wellestablished IT team and it was a pleasure working with him and getting
to know him.”

Supply Chain Management
Co-op Company: MOM Brands
Company Supervisor: Stacie Allstot
Faculty Mentor: Gene Gutman
Student: “From the day I interviewed with MOM Brands until my closing
presentation, my time working at MOM brands was undoubtedly an
outstanding learning experience. While being hired as a co-op student
was a tremendous honor, it was also challenging. In my case, this was
my first time working in “Corporate America” and with just finishing
my freshman year, I was eager to learn about supply chain management
but also knew I had to be ready to challenge myself both socially and
professionally.”
Employer: “Tony was an exemplary member of the MOM Brands team and
Customer Solutions department during his co-op. His initiative, drive,
and desire to truly learn our business certainly benefited both Tony and
MOM Brands. Through his outstanding work ethic and ambition, Tony
offered business solutions and aided in cost savings measures. Tony’s
drive to learn our business processes was evident in his determination
and tenacity to resolve issues and bring added value to the internship.
He was flexible and adapted to our ever-changing work environment
where time management and the ability to multi task are crucial. In the
words of one of our team members “Tony’s a rock star!”
