Colin McMahon Home About Gallery Website Email Resume Process Contact Next About Me Hello! My name is Colin McMahon. Let me tell you a little bit about myself... My love for graphic design began in high school when I took a publications class. I soon realized that it was a creative avenue I desired to succeed in. Therefore I continued my education in the Graphic Design field and received my A.A.S at MCC-Penn Valley. Package design along with layout design has become my most enjoyable work. When it comes to layout design I seem to have a natural talent for figuring out where things should be placed on the page. Though my main interest is layout and packaging design, I also enjoy the fine arts such as drawing, painting, calligraphy, and photo manipulations. Along with a passion for the arts, I also have many other hobbies, including card games, video games, watching anime, watching old cartoons, studying the Star Wars universe, studying the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, musical theater, and studying Greek and viking mythology. I am a team player and can get a long with virtually anyone. I am also very good about keeping things organized. The point of the job was to create a rum gift box that would include all of the various flavors needed to make tropical rum drinks. Designing the bottle and box labels was easy enough, I chose to stay with a simple rustic theme with a touch of class by painting a woodgrain onto the box and using a parchment background for the labels. After coming up with a logo and design for the labels I took the project a step further by designing recipe cards to go along with it. The recipe cards have the same parchment background and over all style and fonts as the rum labels so that the branding is consistent. I also created illustrations for each drink in Illustrator to go along with the recipes on the cards. Finally I chose to have the set include tiny swords and umbrellas for garnishing the beverages. The combination of the type of yeasts employed for fermentation, distillation method, aging conditions, and blending determines the characteristic flavor of rum. Made with molasses, water, mash and yeast, Salty Pirate Original Spiced rum is distilled in a continuous still. Once distilled, the clear spirit is aged in oak barrels for up to a year, adding a golden color and character to the rum before the flavors and spices are added. The brand’s taste is achieved through a proprietary recipe, which is blended into the rum mixture at the final stages of production, making use of spices indigenous to the Caribbean Islands. Resume Process Contact Next Home About Gallery Website Email The Crimson Crow Campaign The Crimson Crow is more than a job to me, it is a retirement dream that I hope to someday make a reality. The job was to create branding and identity for a medieval themed tavern. It began with a logo and grew into something much larger, with a menu, coasters, gift cards and even a sign. When I designed the logo I wanted to make something simple that would be easy to recolor for various needs. So I chose to only use one color and not use any more detail than necessary. This was a fruitful choice because it made adaptation for other pieces of the campaign much more simple. After looking at past annual reports Electronic Arts has released I realized that for a company that makes and sells entertainment, their annual reports are incredibly boring. It was not just the text that was so boring about it though, it was the lack of imagery and the way the whole thing was laid out was just bland. So when creating this one, I strived to fix these problems. I did so by first changing the way the columns were laid out. Next, on the pages that were about the video game sales I chose to make them more visually interesting by adding imagery from those games to the foot of the page. Tolkien, so when I was tasked with creating a poetry book, I decided to theme it after him and fill it with his poems. Because of this, I chose to use a thick, brown parchment style paper for the printing and used a Lord of the Rings themed font. I also lined the front and back of the book with a map of Middle-Earth which greatly benefited the overall design. I print and store every piece of my process in a binder using page protectors. This allows me to easily store and come back to any and all jobs I work on. Next I create a mood board for the theme of the job and another one of similar types of jobs. These allow me to gather inspiration. After that, I create a mind map. The mind map serves as an outlet for me to get all ideas both relevant and irrelevant out of my head and onto paper. After making a mind map I sketch my layout and logo ideas out on either paper or in Illustrator. After doing this I move on to figuring out my color pallet and font choices by creating a swatch and type study. With the type study I tend to experiment with about thirty sets of fonts. I then narrow them down to my favorite fifteen, then five, and then finally I choose one to three fonts to use on the final design. After I do this, I start mocking up my designs digitally and tweak them until I am satisfied. Finally after going through all of these steps I come up with a finished products ready for critique.
