If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call our office or log into AdvisorTrac prior to your appointment. Note: Except for emergencies, please silence your cell phone during your advising appointment. WORKING WITH YOUR ADVISOR The relationship between advisor and advisee is one of shared responsibility. Though you are ultimately responsible for the choices you make in college, the university realizes that you may need the mentoring and advice of academic advisors. Your academic advisor is your primary resource regarding academic issues, opportunities, and programs. Advisors can help you fully understand all of your options and avoid needless mistakes but only if you take the initiative to seek their advice. ADVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES • Clarify university policies, regulations, programs, and procedures • Be available to meet with you each semester • Offer advice on selecting courses and assist you in developing an academic plan • Be a responsive listener and refer you to appropriate support services when needed • Discuss your academic performance and its implications • Help you to explore your interests, abilities, and goals and relate them to academic majors • Be knowledgeable about career exploration opportunities and resources • Offer you the opportunity to actively participate in the advising relationship • Provide suggestions but leave final decisions up to you Advisement Center Learn more at www.uwstout.edu/services/advisement Advisement Center University of Wisconsin-Stout Advising Syllabus Page 2 STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES • Check UW-Stout email account daily • Take the initiative to contact your advisor • Come prepared for meetings • Keep your advisor informed of any changes in your progress, schedule, and goals • Be familiar with the requirements of your major and schedule classes accordingly • Be knowledgeable about policies, requirements, and performance standards • Be knowledgeable about prerequisites and discuss course sequencing with your advisor • Be aware of university procedures and timelines for enrolling in classes • Observe academic deadlines and make advisement appointments well in advance of those dates • Keep track of your grades in each class; communicate with instructors if you have questions about your grades • Follow through with appropriate action after advising meetings • Accept responsibility for your decisions and actions that affect your educational progress and goals SAFE ZONE UW-Stout advisors actively strive to create an open, respectful, and supportive environment for all people.
