You could call Tom Micek, of academic
custodial, the king of campus recycling.
He drives a new recycling truck,
complete with a lift; a fuzzy, black and
white striped seat cover; and a picture of
his 11-year-old daughter,
Sammy, taped to the dash.
Last year, he and his
colleagues recycled over
six thousand pounds of
aluminum, tin, glass, and
plastic from the academic
areas and more than 224
thousand pounds of paper
campus-wide.
Two weeks ago I tagged
along with Tom on his
route. He has 20 stops on
campus, mainly in academic
facilities.
Tom also took me along on his regular
trip to the Dunn County Recycling Center
where he drops off five to seven hundred
pounds of cardboard each trip.
He says his new recycling truck is
working out great. Much better than the
U-haul truck he had to drive for several
months. The State required Stout to use
the rented vehicle while they decided if
we could replace an old van that burst into
flames on Tom’s route in 2005.
While we drove in the new shiny, white
vehicle, Tom explained that
this has been one of his
favorite jobs in his 29 years
at Stout.
For the past two years he
has enjoyed the variety of
the recycling position and
all the different people he
works with.
Tom says he has 16 more
paychecks coming. Then
he will be enjoying the
company of his children
and his wife, Sharon. He
will also be spending more time on his 17
½ acre homestead between Menomonie
and Downsville.
Still, I can tell that he will miss his
recycling route with all the waving and
hollering back and forth with coworkers
and buddies.
Jarvis Hall Science Wing
Fall 2006
The Division of State Facilities (DSF) is soliciting proposals from architectural/engineering firms for the design of the Jarvis Hall Science Wing Renovation and Addition.
Three UW-Stout representatives attended the preliminary screening of applicants on
October 19, 2006 in Madison.
UW-Stout will provide tours of the Jarvis Hall Science Wing and an overview of the
project to interested firms on October 31, 2006. DSF, UW System, and UW-Stout will vote
on the selection of a firm on November 17, 2006 in Madison.
Design work is estimated to begin in June 2007 and substantial completion and
occupancy is planned for June 2011.

UW-Stout & the Environment
Last year we recycled…
224,215
pounds of mixed paper
51,485
pounds of scrap metal
and wood
38,740
pounds of corrugated
cardboard
6,127
pounds of aluminum,
tin, glass, and plastic
UW-Stout has the lowest
energy usage of any UW
comprehensive campus.
The Administrative & Student Life
Services division contributes to an
environmentally sound university.
Here are just a few examples:
A Jeff Russell Leadership &
Professional Development group
took on the charge of recommending
energy conservation measures that
engage the campus community and
increase our energy efficiency.
Building maintenance installed
motion sensing light switches in most
of the rest rooms, storage rooms, and
service areas in the Residence Halls,
Student Center, and Commons.
Instead of going to the dump, the
heating plant’s waste ash is picked
up by a local excavating company
to be reused in roads and other
construction projects.

Student Life Services division, recreation and intramural sports was the highest ranked program or

Red Cedar Hall Award
Red Cedar Hall will be featured as a citation winner in the 2006 American School & University
Architectural Portfolio, due in print in late
November.
The Architectural Portfolio competition for
school design showcases the very best in educational interiors and construction.
UW-Stout’s newest residence hall was designed by ESG Architects, Inc. of Minneapolis
and SDS Architects of Eau Claire with a great
deal of input from students and the Student
Life Services staff.
The American School & University
Architectural Portfolio jury was impressed
with Red Cedar Hall’s communal kitchen layout.
They commented that “the design really
focuses on getting students together, which can
be a problem with suite/apartment living.”
Scott Griesbach, Director of University
Housing, said “we did focus groups with
students and the communal kitchens were an
outgrowth of those discussions. Building community is vital to our mission so we created
these areas to draw students out of their suites.”
