Winter 2008 News from the Vice Chancellor Administrative & Student Life Services Shadowing Susan Lew Inside This Issue Susan Lew Shadowing...................................... 1 Employee of the Month.................. 2 Sustainability ................................. 2 There are a lot of doors at UW-Stout. As I recall, there are around 10,000 of them, many of which I’ve never opened. So as I was preparing to shadow Susan Lew this month, I wondered what I would find behind the door to Room 32 in the Sports and Fitness Center. Legacy Internship .......................... 3 Susan is the Head Athletic Trainer, a position that has always interested me, especially since she is the primary trainer for the football team. She and Toni Marousek, Assistant Athletic Trainer, share responsibility for all the athletic teams. She also has the help of two Certified Athletic Trainers who come over from Red Cedar Medical Center to help with sports coverage — Jeff Banks and Jarvis Project ................................. 6 Shoppes@Stout .............................. 3 Stout Adventures ........................... 4 Welcome ........................................ 5 Welcome (continued)..................... 6 The Good News .............................. 6 News from the Vice Chancellor is published quarterly for ASLS Amy Tryggestad. What I found behind the door to Room 32 was a small, wellrun facility to treat and support our student athletes. Susan is originally from Stillwater, MN with her educational training from UW-Eau Claire and a Master of Science in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from South Dakota State University. What I learned is that Athletic Trainers are certified through a national testing process and also licensed by the State of Wisconsin. Susan works closely with Dr. McNally from Red Cedar Clinic to make sure that athletes are physically able to compete and to aid the recovery process if they become injured. There’s an amazing array of equipment and techniques used in treating injuries, ranging from electrical stimulation for muscle re-education in recovering from surgery to ultra sound, which utilizes deep heat for overuse-type injuries such as tendinitis or bursitis. Like most of the coaches, Susan also teaches at least one class. I was impressed with Susan’s dedication to the responsibilities of her position. Certain times of the year can be very busy – some teams practice as early as 5 a.m., while other teams are working till 9 at night. Many times the trainers need to be available during or after practice or competitions. During football season, Susan says the job becomes a 7-day-a-week responsibility when injuries occur. Susan commented on the great working relationship she has with all the current coaching staff which really benefits the student athletes. Everyone’s primary concern is the health and well-being of each athlete. Susan’s been at UW-Stout for 8 years and lives near Elk Mound with her teacher/coach husband and three sons. division employees. Darrin Witucki was the individual who nominated both women: “Deb and Cathy show their commitment to the University by being committed to serving our external customers, internal customers, and students. They have shown a continued commitment to provide a well-kept building; the Memorial Student Center continually scores high in national student center benchmark surveys for cleanliness. They just don’t seem to have “down” days when it comes to having positive attitudes, especially when it comes to working with our customers.” Tammy Cutsforth, Budget, Planning and Analysis, has been named the Classified Employee of the Month for November 2007. In her nomination statement, Meridith Wentz had this to say about Tammy: “Tammy is knowledgeable, hardworking, ethical, dependable, and trustworthy. She can always be counted on to follow through on projects, and is able to effectively manage both large, long-term projects as well as new, short-term projects. Tammy is often involved in projects that can become controversial, and she does an excellent job in responding to questions, comments and concerns in an accurate and ethical manner. She works well with others both within and outside of the BPA office, and faculty and staff continue to seek out her knowledge for campus projects.” UW-Stout Submits First Report for the President’s Climate Commitment Tammy Cutsforth and UW-Stout’s 2-month report to the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) can be viewed at http://www.uwstout.edu/ Meridith Wentz “Sustainable development is...development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” — World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future, 1987 sustainability/ACUPCC 2monthreport.pdf.
