Building Overview
• On May 16, 2010, one of the worst hailstorms in Oklahoma history cut a path
of destruction several miles wide through Oklahoma City. The Associated
Press reports that the storm dropped “hail the size of softballs, leaving 5" hail
drifts in its wake. The hail came in at a 45-degree angle and tore away the
north face of every building in the area, chewing through roofing and siding.”
• Three TOPCOAT® roofs totaling almost 15,000 square feet held up to one of
the most severe hailstorms in Oklahoma history. The elastomeric properties
of the TOPCOAT® product prevented damage to the coated metal roof
systems, leaving only imprints in the coating but no dents or damage to the
metal roof.
• The three TOPCOAT® roofs that survived the hailstorm were applied in 2004
with 18 dry mils of field coating and 78 mils on seams and flashings.
Challenge
• Approximately 30,000 square feet of EPDM single-ply roofing “were
completely punched through with holes from the hailstorm,” said Musgrave.
• About 50,000 square feet of gravel-covered built-up roofing (BUR) were
nearing the end of their 30-year service lives when the storm hit. Insurance
adjusters felt these older BURs needed to be replaced because wind scour
had swept away the roofs’ protective gravel surfacing.
Materials Used
• TOPCOAT® Elastomeric Roofing Membrane System
• EnergyGuard™ Tapered Polyiso Insulation
• GAFGLAS® Ply 4 Ply Sheet
Solution
• Gravel-covered, multi-ply asphalt roofing is a proven roofing solution in areas
of Oklahoma prone to nickel- and dime-size hailstorms, according to
Musgrave.
• The three TOPCOAT® roofs were easily repaired after power-washing and
applying several mils of new coating.
• TOPCOAT® membrane is a proven performer that stood up to a severe
Oklahoma City hailstorm and is available with warranties of up to 20 years.
• Properly designed and installed, EnergyGuard™ Tapered Polyiso Insulation
Systems offer high thermal efficiency and virtually eliminate ponding water.
