September 12, 1997, began well for Tom Kessler, 46-year-old public information officer

The Wright-Seburn Scholarship fund was established in 2003, in loving memory of Opal
Seburn, who was a former student of the Junior College of Kansas City prior to it
becoming the Metropolitan Community College District it is today. The Scholarship was
set up by Dr. Dorothy Wright, who spent more than 40 years at Metropolitan Community
College, first as an instructor, then Counselor, Registrar, Dean of Instruction, and Acting
President of the Penn Valley Community College. Throughout her career, it was not
uncommon for Dr. Wright to assist students who were having financial difficulties with
paying tuition and fees, or purchasing books. Many of those students who were helped
by Dr. Wright never knew that the "emergency monies" that were mysteriously found
actually came out of her own pocket. After Dr. Wright's passing in 2007, the scholarship
is continuing to carry on with her mission of helping students in need.

Dinah Athans came to Synergy Services as many do, looking for someone to talk to
about circumstances that occurred in her life that she had no control over. The Synergy
counselors gave her their ear, their care and understanding. Dinah came to know that
her opportunity to live the life she desired was through obtaining an education. At the
time of Dinah's death, she was attending the Maple Woods campus of the Metropolitan
Community College of Kansas City, where she was taking 17 hours in the fall of 2008.
After her death, Dinah's friends wanted to do something in Dinah's name that would carry
on her spirit. Listening to and reading comments from her teachers and classmates
about her enthusiasm in class gave them the idea that they wanted to do something to
help others who faced circumstance in life as Dinah had. They wanted to pass on

Janet was a life-long friend of the Boston Terrier having been born to parents who owned
and bred an "American Gentlemen" at the time of her birth. From her first childhood
puppy named Corky to her adored Happy that was birthday present after her marriage
through her many "Champions", Janet's life was filled with the joy of loving her dogs and
being loved by them. That love ultimately spread to all breeds when she joined the Heart
of America Kennel Club in Kansas City and began 30 years of dedicated service
including the office of Secretary and Board Member for the past 13 years. No job was
too big or too small, too complex or too easy to escape her devotion to the club and the
dogs she loved so deeply.
