Applied Peace Studies Minor Requirements Introduction Applied Peace Studies, which is a 21 credit minor, consists of the systematic interdisciplinary study of the causes of violent conflict and the conditions of peace, with an emphasis on approaches to nonviolent conflict transformation. This program is founded on the premise that education can contribute to society by helping students understand and deal creatively with the consequences of violent human behavior and by helping them learn the skills to be effective peacemakers. The creation of peace is one of the great unsolved human problems. This program seeks to contribute toward a solution. Students will critically evaluate and devise strategies for peacebuilding through reflection on different ethical, religious, philosophical, and cultural approaches to peace, the work of the major thinkers and activists, and contemporary public policy. Students will develop an understanding of the different philosophies, approaches, and uses of nonviolent conflict transformation.
