The MIT Forum for Supply Chain Innovation was co‐founded by Dr Shoumen Datta (see cv, bio1) following his role as a Member of the Technology Board of the MIT Auto ID Center. The Forum asks, in principle: how to extract value from data. Hence, the Forum is at the center of one of the pivotal areas of decision making that includes business operations, security, manufacturing, healthcare, e‐government and almost any field one can imagine. Formed in 2002, the Forum provides a unique collaborative environment of experts, harnessing the global excellence and capabilities of MIT. The Forum brings together academics, researchers, and practitioners to develop ideas, practical principles and critical thinking. Through its research, the Forum affects, among other things, supply chain management and decision support systems. It is dedicated to pursuing innovative solutions, education and providing members with R&D guidance, driving new ideas and assisting with the implementation of strategic technology‐based solutions. The Forum helps members imagine, understand, manage and catalyse convergence of innovation. It was co‐founded by Dr Shoumen Datta (School of Engineering, MIT), Professor David Simchi‐Levi (School of Engineering, MIT) and Professor Charles Fine (Sloan School of Management, MIT). 1

PARTIAL LIST of ACTIVITIES in PRE-COLLEGE PUBLIC EDUCATION in CALIFORNIA [ 1995 - 1998 ]
[1] Helped plan Thurgood Marshall Academic HS with mandatory four year requirements in language, science and
mathematics. An instructional success at this school was the cover story of US News & World Report [2nd December 1996]
and this pre-engineering program segued to evolve as the first hands-on Cisco Networking Academy, that became a
national and international model for IT education (www.lgca.org/ciscoacademy/Documentation/netacad.pdf). Also review:

[2] Instituted mentorship and internship program for students and teachers with UC Berkeley and Stanford University
(www.jozie.net/JF/chemclass/Chemistry/curielec.htm). Recruited highly qualified teachers in language arts, mathematics,
science and technology to uphold academic excellence. Partial funding from Silicon Graphics. Unique professional
development partnership to enable teachers to take courses for credit at UC Berkeley at no cost to teacher or SFUSD.
Josephine Miles Fellowship founded and sponsored by Carol Christ, Vice-Chancellor and Provost, UC Berkeley. Funding for
teachers to attend UC Berkeley.
[3] Pacific Bell upgraded network infrastructure [about $2.5 million]. Detwiler Foundation donated 1000 computers for
home computer program. Established joint venture with UC Berkeley Interactive University Program to benefit students
and teachers from UC resources. Received NTIA-TIIAP award [$650,000] from US Department of Commerce for
Interactive University Program with UC Berkeley.
[4] Worked with UC Berkeley Chancellor Chang Lin Tien and Vice Chancellor & Provost Carol Christ [see news] to shape
Berkeley Pledge activities to help Bay Area students (SFUSD) to gain broader access to advanced academic opportunities.
[5] Nominated by US Department of Commerce and Information Technology Association of America to Chair Task Force.
1997 National Information Technology Convocation. Strategic planning for IT skills and economic impact of IT workforce.
[6] Formed ASSOCIATED SCIENTISTS (Founder & President) that catalyzed the change of K-12 science standards for
State of California. These standards received a perfect score from the American Federation of Teachers [AFT] in their 1998
report Making Standards Matter [www.aft.org]. Review standards by ASSOCIATED SCIENTISTS for California

Dr Shoumen Palit Austin Datta
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
www.mit.edu
http://groups.google.com/group/shoumen/files?hl=en
Dr Datta is a scientist in Engineering Systems Division and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
at the School of Engineering, MIT. He is also the Co-founder and currently the Research Director (formerly
Executive Director) of the MIT Forum for Supply Chain Innovation, which is a joint endeavour at MIT between
faculty at the School of Engineering and the MIT Sloan School of Management. The MIT Forum, since 2001, is a
global consortium of industry, governments, organizations and academia. Dr Datta acts in a research and
innovation strategic advisory capacity to major industries, governments and global agencies. He has been a
visiting lecturer at Trinity College in Dublin, HEC in Montreal, ESSEC Business School in Paris and Chalmers
University in Goteborg, Sweden. He is a past-member of the Technology Board of the Auto ID Center at MIT and
formerly the Director for Process Systems and Biomedical Applications at the MIT Data Center which aims to
address semantic systems, interoperability and effective use of high volume data acquired through automatic
identification technologies (for example, radio frequency identification or RFID). Dr Datta is interested to explore
innovative concepts, tools, technologies and standards, the confluence of which may impact decision systems in
fields as diverse as medicine, healthcare, security and any time oriented enterprise (TOE). Such convergence may
shape the evolution of interoperable “intelligent” decision support systems. His current interests include (0) use of
advances in econometrics to improve forecasting accuracy and risk management in a broad spectrum of decision
support systems in business operations, supply chain and security planning, (1) next generation auto-id tools such
as ultrawideband (UWB) and software defined radio (SDR) that are frequency agnostic but multi-standard
compliant, (2) contextual numbering of numbers and semantic convergence through use of IPv6, (3) systems
interoperability using semantic tools integrated with Web X.0 and (SOA) service oriented architecture, (4) use of
(nano) sensors in healthcare for better management and to reduce service cost, (5) energy supply chain with
focus on biofuels, (6) global educational programs and executive training to stimulate convergence of disciplines in
order to catalyse innovation. In 2008, he co-founded Centre for Innovation in Distributed Systems (www.cids.ie) to
further convergence of ideas. Please see MIT Libraries http://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/41896/browse-date
Prior to developing his interest in innovative engineering and systems, such as supply chain management, he was
involved for five years with global industry (USA, Europe, Japan), information technology and public education in
US Federal Government and State of California. Dr Datta earned his PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry and
genetics from Rutgers University School of Medicine (NJ) in collaboration with Department of Molecular Biology at
Princeton University (NJ). He has spent 15 years as a biomedical research scientist and instructor in molecular
medicine with a focus on transcriptional regulation in DNA tumour viruses, yeast genetics, neuro-endocrine cancers
and the human genome project. He has been a student and/or researcher and/or scientist and/or instructor at
various institutions including Presidency College, University of Calcutta, University of Cambridge, Université de
Paris VII, University of Pittsburgh, Princeton University, Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts
General Hospital (Fellow in Medicine), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Whitehead Institute and Human
Genome Center at MIT), University of California School of Medicine at San Francisco and University of California at
Berkeley. He is concerned about and involved in K-12 public education activities in Cambridge-Boston community
and with outreach efforts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) program for public K-12 schools.
