Fall 2013
This report provides an overview of the Applicant Survey Project (formerly known as the Prospect
Survey). This project focused on determining MCC student applicant behavior. Specifically, why do
students enroll in classes at MCC, do not make payment, and do not re-enroll that same semester?
What are the common themes of students who are dropped for non-payment of tuition and then do not
re-enroll? Are our financial processes and/or payment options a barrier to students? Are there
psychographic categories that could help explain their behavior and assist MCC in serving their needs?

Methodology
This report contains results from the administration of the Applicant Survey, a phone based survey,
administered in the Fall of 2013. The survey was developed based upon a previous Enrollment Survey
instrument used in Fall of 2012. The original survey was updated to reflect current issues relevant to
MCC and modified to reflect new enrollment interests. Specifically questions were added pertaining to
payment of tuition. The survey was formatted for phone administration.
One group of applicants were identified and surveyed (N=2451). Applicants were identified as students
who had enrolled in the fall 2013 semester, were dropped for non-payment of tuition, and did not reenroll that semester.
Four student workers were hired and trained to administer the survey over the phone. Additionally, they
kept track of all calls made to students using a calling log.
Calls were made from 10/17/13 through 12/2/2013. A total of 3001 phone calls were made, which
resulted in 305 completed surveys and 16 partially completed surveys. All students were contacted at
least one time. Callers attempted to contact several hundred students on more than one occasion.
Nineteen percent (19%) of the calls made were determined to be non-working phone numbers.
The majority of the calls were made during MCC’s regular operating hours. On Nov. 13th callers worked
late in the evening and followed up with students who had previously requested an evening call back
time.
Applicants in general were responsive to callers. Around one-third of the students who completed the
survey requested a follow-up call from MCC. The names and phone numbers of those requesting followups were given to Enrollment Services. Many of the student requests centered around enrolling for
spring.

Respondent comments were analyzed. The following picture depicts the most commonly occurring
themes. Students made comments surrounding financial aid most frequently followed by future
enrollment, and wanting follow-up contact. Issue with transcripts, making payment, and SAP were also
reoccurring.
