AS1 and AS2 are leaves from two plants of the same species.
(a) (i)
Use a hand lens to examine AS1 and then make a drawing of a section of the lower
surface of AS1. Labels are not required.

List two observable differences between the upper and the lower surface of AS1.

(b) Use forceps to place AS1 into the bottom of a test-tube and half fill the test-tube with
water. Place the test-tube in the water-bath. After three minutes, carefully remove AS1
from the test-tube and empty the water.
Repeat this procedure using AS2.
(i)
Describe one change in AS1 after this process.

Replace AS1 in a test-tube and half-fill it with ethanol. Replace the test-tube in the
water-bath and leave for 15 minutes.
Repeat this procedure with AS2.
You should begin Question 2 or Question 3 while the test-tubes are in the waterbath.
After 15 minutes, carefully remove the test-tube from the water-bath and use forceps to
remove AS1. Rinse AS1 in water to soften the leaf and then spread AS1 on to a tile.
Repeat this procedure with AS2.

(a) Draw this shape on to card and cut it out, using scissors.
Measure the distance AC on your card.

(b) Insert a pin at any point five mm from point A. Attach the plumb line to the pin and hang
the card from the stand by the pin. Mark the position Z on the card where the plumb line
crosses the edge of the card. The pinhole must be large enough to allow the card to
move freely.

AS3 and AS4 are two samples of soil.
Put AS3 into a boiling tube to a depth of approximately 25 mm. Fill the boiling tube with cold
water. Shake the tube so that the contents are mixed thoroughly. Leave the boiling tube to
settle for four minutes.
Repeat this test with AS4.

Make a labelled drawing of the two boiling tubes after the contents have settled.
