Brave New World - Journal Assignments
Objective:
provide an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the
text by annotating the novel and making note of significant quotations
that develop theme, character, mood and other literary elements. As
well, students will respond to study questions provided and observe the
similarities between the novel's world and their own. These
observations will provide the groundwork for the in-class essay
assignment.
Be aware that class work on the novel is based on the following divisions:
Part I – chapters 1-5 (focus of initial class discussion)
Part II – chapters 6-12 (journal #1)
Part III – chapters 13 – 18 (journal #2)
Journal #1 – based on Part II of the novel (formative: based on levels)
Annotate novel by providing ...
• a minimum of five relevant passages that reveal theme, symbolism,
character, mood, as well as any other literary devices (might also include
passages that are perplexing and/or not understood in the reader's mind).
• ten new vocabulary words along with definition
Quote passages of fewer than four complete lines, and include a page reference within
parentheses at the end of each passage. The excerpt should then be followed by at least
two point form observations about the quotation's significance and/or problems.
