Welcome to the School of Social Work and the Field Education Program. As you know, field
education is an integral component of your graduate school experience. While classroom
learning focuses on discrete knowledge and theoretical background, the field placement provides
an opportunity to practice and exercise the skills and knowledge obtained in the classroom.
You will be placed in one field placement throughout the course of your program here at the
School. You will begin your field placement on Tuesday, June 21 and continue through
Thursday, July 28, 2016. During the summer, you will spend four (8 hour) days per week in
field, Tuesday through Friday. During the fall and spring semesters, you will continue your field
placement in the same agency, three (8 hour) days per week on Wednesdays, Thursdays and
Fridays.
We are very interested in beginning to work with you to match you to your field placement site.
Together we will identify a field site which will be appropriate to the goals of the program and
that will incorporate your learning needs and interests.
Please complete the attached Advanced Standing Planning Guide (ASPG) by March 31, 2016.
You will need to open the document and type the answers in the gray box following each
question (The gray boxes will expand as you add additional characters). Save the document (as
you will need it later) and then attach it in an email to Rebecca Brigham, MSW, Director of Field
Education at brigham@email.unc.edu. Please also copy (cc:) the document to Linda PridgenBraswell, Administrative Assistant at linda_pb@unc.edu. There are many more field
placement options available at this time of year, than later in the spring. The earlier you
provide us with this information, the more opportunities will be available to you.
Once you have submitted an ASPG a member of the Field Education Faculty will contact you to
arrange a telephone interview to discuss with you possible options for your field placement.
We will notify you of your final field placement match when you arrive during the first weeks of
school. You will then be able to arrange for an interview with your prospective field instructor.
Should you have questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact the Director of
Field Education at brigham@email.unc.edu.
We look very forward to working with you and getting to know you over the coming months.
Congratulations on your acceptance to UNC-CH, School of Social Work.
