Screen 15 – Boolean Search Operators
Slide shows a diagram of Boolean Operators.
This section will demonstrate how to find scholarly information through Google
Scholar using Boolean and Filter Searching. For more tips about Boolean
searching, complete the Developing a Search Strategy tutorial.
Boolean Operators
1) AND Operator - Two interlinked circles – one titled marketing AND one titled
Australia. The interlinked section is shaded dark green.
Text Caption: Marketing AND Australia - All results will contain both keywords
marketing AND Australia. In Google Scholar AND is assumed, so it does not
need to be explicitly added.
2) OR Operator - Two interlinked circles – one titled marketing and the other
titled advertising. Both circles are shaded dark green.
Text Caption: marketing OR advertising - Results will contain either keyword,
marketing OR advertising. When including this in an AND search, brackets
should be placed around the OR keywords.
3) NOT Operator – Two interlinked circles – one titled Australia and the other
titled the United States. Australia circle is shaded dark green. Text Caption:
Australia NOT United States - All items with the keyword United States will be
excluded from these results. When using this in an AND search, place the not
at the end of the search string. In Google Scholar the NOT is represented by
a minus [-] sign.
