Managing your information and resources throughout the research process
will save you time when you start using the information.
Managing academic research is always important. However there are some
unique issues associated with the use of the internet for academic research.
These include
 copyright issues around reproducing images, tables, graphs or data,
 special requirements for citing internet resources and
 difficulties in keeping track of internet resources.
These issues need to be considered at the beginning of the research process,
used during your internet searching and addressed when using any
information you have found on the internet.

on the internet, it is not always legal to use these in your research. Before
using these resources always
 make sure the provider is the copyright owner.
 check permissions - look for links like Copyright, Terms of Use or
Creative Commons.
If in doubt, get permission in writing from the copyright owner, especially if you
are writing a thesis or dissertation that may be published. If you are a current
Monash University staff member or student the Academic Integrity tutorial will
help you determine whether you can reuse the items you find on the internet.

Screen 4 – Referencing internet sources

Internet research has different citation and referencing requirements from
traditional research. When citing web pages or web documents many
referencing styles require the web address or URL, date accessed or retrieved
and date updated information.
Even referencing information that is required for both print and electronic
resources can be more difficult to find on the internet. For example,
 the author is often not identified on individual web pages. (Rollover
caption: Sometimes the author is the organisation or individual who owns
and produces the site. Check the About Us, home page and branding to
identify the author.)
 the copyright date commonly found at the bottom of web pages is not
always the date published or updated. (Rollover caption: Sometimes date
updated information is displayed at the bottom of the text, while date
published is often found under or near the title in a web page or document.
 some web pages have no individual title. (Rollover caption: Look for titles
at the top of the page or in the URL of the web page. If there is no title,
perhaps you should review whether the resource is of high enough quality
to use in your research.)
Different referencing styles have different requirements for dealing with this
missing information. Check out the Citing and Referencing Library Guide for
requirements and tips for citing websites in your referencing style.

Readers are instructed to identify the author, date updated and URL of this web
page. Readers select responses by clicking on the appropriate parts of the

The correct URL can often be found in the address bar of the browser.
The author can be a company logo or other branding if the entire name
is not visible.
The last updated date is located in this instance directly under the title
of the report prefaced by the heading Latest Issue. Also look for any
indication of date modified for this information.

Websites can be restructured, web addresses changed and documents
removed or replaced. As a result, it can be difficult to keep track of the
resources you have used in your research.
Here are a few tips for organising your internet research effectively.
 Bookmark the resource
 Save a copy of the page or document
 Record your searches
Remember to organise your files logically and back up all of your research
regularly
Tabbed boxes:
 Bookmark: The way search engines rank results changes over time. This
can make it difficult to find the same item using the same search.
Bookmark the website, database, document or publication so you can find
it again. Also many referencing styles require the web address or URL to
be provided in the reference list.

Save: The internet has made it easy to publish, but also easy to delete
or alter publications. If you need the resource for your research don’t

rely solely on online access. Also, if you reference the resource, you
may be required to produce the original version. Saving a copy ensures
your continued access to the resource and the information it contains.

Record: Recording your searches allows you to keep track of useful
websites and databases and the information you have found within them.
Create a table to record where you searched, what search strategy you
used and what information you found. Also record the date as some
referencing styles require date accessed information to be provided in the
reference list entries.
