Text [Box] 1 Preferred Citation James De Weerd papers, Archives and Special Collections, Ball State University Libraries - Page 3 - James De Weerd papers RG.10.13.04 Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History James Arthur DeWeerd was born May 23, 1916 in Olivet, Illinois and served in World War II as a chaplain in the 30th Infantry Division, U.S. Army. He earned an A.B. from Taylor University, a M.A. from Ball State University, and received a D.D. from Tylor University. He served as a Wesleyan minister in Fairmount, IN, as a clergyman for the United Methodist Church and as pastor of the Cadle Tabernacle in Indianapolis, IN. DeWeerd was active in many organizations including Bethany Children's Home in Bethany, KY, The Sons of the American Revolution, the YMCA, the Masons, and he served as Chairman of the Juvenile Delinquency Study Commission in Indiana. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Craig. Scope and Contents The James De Weerd Papers consist of speeches, writings, correspondence, newsclippings, and photographs. the papers primarily reflect his activities in the Sons of the American Revolution, but also include his memoir of his World War II service Memory is Bitter-Sweet.
