CMGT 497 – Social Responsibility in Construction
Management
Belize Service Learning Project, Spring 2012
Initial Scope
The Department of Construction Management, in
collaboration with Peacework, selects the village of
Bella Vista, for its 2012 Belize Service Learning
Project Site. Bella Vista, with an approximate
population of 4,000 people, is located within the
Banana Belt of Belize on the border of Stann Creek
and Toledo Districts. The community offers numerous
opportunities for service learning projects.
The lack of sufficient resources and infrastructure in
Bella Vista
the village school provides a unique learning experience
that combines engineering and construction with social
and cultural implications. The school project provides a
variety of opportunities for ‘hands-on’ engagement.
These will include:

planning and constructing selected projects

additional renovation projects at the school as
needed

developing and delivering associated training
We will also undertake the broader project to develop a
master plan for village infrastructure that will instruct
future service projects.
The spring course begins with a social and
cultural
overview,
project
planning,
prototype
