The Power of Being There® Technical Brief Migrating from DSView® 2.x to DSView 3 W H AT ’ S I N S I D E TECHNICAL SUMMARY Overview procedures for migrating data and appliances from DSView 2.x to DSView 3, post-migration configuration of cascade and multi-user switches, and other helpful hints to make this upgrade as smooth as possible Avocent has automated most of the process of migrating from DSView 2.x to DSView 3 using wizards. To ensure a smooth transition, we recommend that you perform the following tasks: • Prepare the DSView 2.x system for database backup • Backup the DSView 2.x database • Import the DSView 2.x database zip file into DSView 3 • Migrate the appliances • Add cascade switches and merge multi-user switches For a more detailed explanation of the migration steps, see Chapter 10, “Using DSView Management Software Tools” in the DSView 3 Management Software Installer/User Guide. 2 TECHNICAL BRIEF - Migrating from DSView®2.x to DSView 3 PREPARING THE DSVIEW 2.X SYSTEM FOR DATABASE BACKUP (OPTIONAL) These steps ensure that the DSView 2.x database information imported into the DSView 3 system is accurate and current. Skipping these steps will not prevent you from making changes to the data after it has been imported into DSView 3, but should make the transition faster and less complicated. When finished with the preparation steps, you should backup the DSView 2.x system (see the next procedure) so that the most current database is available. 1. Delete unused appliances, cascade switches and SPC devices from the DSView 2.x system to prevent unnecessary migration into DSView 3. 2. Update unit names to your naming conventions in DSView 2.x before beginning the migration process. This enables you to easily recognize the names of groups, appliances, target devices and SPC devices in the DSView 3 system. 3. Verify that user permissions in the DSView 2.x system are current to make certain that the correct users will be imported into DSView 3. BACKING UP THE DSVIEW 2.X DATABASE AND IMPORTING IT INTO DSVIEW 3 1. Locate the DSAuth Migration Utility on the DSView 3 CDROM to create a 2.x database backup suitable for import. Only execute the utility on the machine that is running the DSView 2.x DSAuth Server. The backup zip file created by the DSAuth Migration Utility is intended for use by DSView 3 only and should not be used to restore your DSView 2.x system. The DSAuth Migration Utility will shutdown and restart the DSAuth Service during its execution. 2. Use the Import DSView 2.x Database Wizard on the DSView 3 system to import the backup file created by the DSAuth Migration Utility. To run the wizard, select Units > Tools > Import DSView 2.x Database Wizard. If there are target devices in your DSView 2.x system that have not been renamed from their defaults (for example Port 1, Channel 1, Outlet 1), check the option “Allow target devices to be added for nodes that have a default name” on the Select Import Options wizard page. Each default target device name found during the import process is adjusted to include the name of the appliance associated with the target device. 3. From the Users tab, examine the authentication services that were added during the database import and change the properties as needed. The properties are set to the following defaults during import: User Browsing = Browse Anonymously (Active Directory and NT). SSL Mode = Do Not Use SSL (Active Directory) Enable Chasing Referrals = Not enabled (Active Directory). Copyright © 2005 Avocent. All rights reserved. TECHNICAL BRIEF - Migrating from DSView®2.x to DSView 3 Credentials for user browsing are also used in authentication requests. External authentication of users logging into DSView may also require credentials to access the external authentication service. NOTE: All authentication services from pre-existing LDAP services on the DSView 2.x are imported from the 2.x database. 4. The Migration Status column in the Units view displays the units and unit groups that were imported. The status for appliances still needing to be migrated will be “Migration Needed”, while target devices will always show “Migration Completed” immediately after the 2.x database has been imported. MIGRATING THE APPLIANCES 1. Copy the DSView 3 supported appliance firmware files onto a TFTP server and write down the names and directory paths for these files. This information is used in step 2, below, when adding a migration task. 2. Go to Systems > Tasks > Add in the Add Task Wizard and select “Migrate DSView 2.x Units” task. Multiple appliances of the same type can be selected to migrate. 3. Add additional migration tasks in the wizard as needed to migrate all appliances. 4. The Migration Status column in the Units tab will be updated with “Migration Completed” for successfully migrated appliances. Migration tasks can be executed again if they fail for any reason (for example, entering the wrong address for the TFTP server). If a failure occurs, simply change the task properties to the correct information and execute the task again. 5. Verify an appliance has been successfully migrated and is communicating with DSView 3 by clicking on the appliance from the units view and then selecting to view the Appliance Settings panels. 6. Ensure that KVM and Serial sessions can be launched to target devices by selecting the KVM Session or Serial Session action link for a target device in the Units view to launch a session. NOTE: After migration has completed successfully, it may take a few minutes for IQ Module upgrades to complete on the DSR® appliances. Copyright © 2005 Avocent. To define the cascade switch types and to merge multi-user switches into one switch, execute the Resync Wizard on individual appliances that have attached switches.
