Compeer NYS 2014 Survey Report
Introduction
About Compeer
Compeer Inc. is an international 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1973 in Rochester, New
York. In 2014, Compeer had more than fifty affiliate locations based in communities throughout the
United States, Australia, and Canada; twenty (20) affiliate programs are located in New York State.
Every Compeer affiliate serves adults with mental illness through its core service: one-to-one supportive
friendship. Through this matched relationship, based on gender, age, and interests, Compeer Friends
commit to meet once / week for one hour for one year. Meetings occur in safe settings using natural
supports (i.e., enjoying a walk together, meeting for coffee, playing checkers or tennis, exploring a
library). Based on the time-honored tradition that the support of friends is healing, Compeer affiliates
“make friends and change lives.”
The Compeer Model
The Compeer Model was developed using the three elements of support – relatedness, autonomy,
competence. Research done by Richard M. Ryan, et al, a professor in the Department of Clinical and
Social Sciences in Psychology at the University of Rochester, shows that where these elements are
present in relationships, people feel more secure, emotionally open, and enjoy greater well-being and
mental health.
Named a “best-practices model for recovery” by the American Psychological Association, the Compeer
Model is creative, flexible and adaptable to demographic populations, such as youth, veterans, and older
adults. Currently, fourteen (14) Compeer affiliates offer youth services. In late 2010, CompeerCORPS, a
veteran-to-veteran mentoring program began serving United States military veterans in New York State.
Compeer affiliate program outcomes include social connectivity, community inclusion, preparation for
work or school, decreased use of or non-utilization of hospitalization or crisis services, increased
independence. For youth the outcomes monitored are increased self-esteem, resistance to peer pressure,
resistance to drugs/alcohol, improved conflict management, and an increased awareness of actions.
The Compeer Model is included in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Service Administration National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and
Practices.
Compeer’s Mission
Compeer develops, delivers and supports model programs that inspire and engage communities through
the power of volunteer friends and mentors in our Compeer affiliate programs to improve the quality of
life for adults, children who strive for good mental health, and their families.
Compeer provides supportive leadership to its community-based Compeer Programs throughout the
United States, Australia, and Canada.
The objectives of Compeer are to support our affiliate programs through program expertise, branding,
and marketing communication and to grow our current base of programs, by providing cost-effective
solutions to communities.
Compeer serves and supports our affiliate programs with program start-up training and best practice
management, timely news and information; research, data and statistics, volunteer recruitment
strategies, conferences, and web-conference educational series.

Compeer NYS 2014 Survey Report
Introduction
Through our time-tested model and evidence-based practices of supportive friendship and mentoring,
Compeer creates programs to meet the diverse needs of communities that want to improve and
positively impact the lives of individuals living with mental health challenges, and their families.
Compeer's community-based programs serve adults, veterans and their families, youth with emotional
challenges including transition age youth and at-risk youth, and the elderly with volunteer mentor and
supportive friendship programs. Our programs are measured annually and our outcomes are consistently
proven effective year after year through positive survey results on individuals' improved self esteem;
reintegration into family, home, faith and community; increased likelihood of employment; and overall
quality of life.

Compeer NYS 2014 Survey Report
Introduction
Survey Objectives
On an annual basis, Compeer Inc. administers a series of surveys via its affiliate programs. Completion
of the annual survey process is a requisite component of compliance with Compeer Best Practices,
included in the Licensing Agreement that is signed at program startup and renewed annually.
The primary objectives of these surveys are to:
 Gain an understanding of the demographic and programmatic composition of its affiliate programs,
 Gauge the satisfaction of Compeer’s constituents (clients, volunteers, mental health professionals
and, in addition for youth, parents/guardians) with the Compeer Program, and
 Gauge the satisfaction of Compeer affiliates with the services provided by Compeer Inc.
Through each of these surveys, Compeer also seeks to identify key strengths and improvement
opportunities for strategic focus in coming years.
Research Methodology
Compeer developed a series of surveys to address the objectives outlined above. The surveys and their
corresponding components are described briefly below:

Suggestions for improvement
In November, 2014 Compeer distributed an electronic version of Part II (Adult), of the survey to all
Compeer affiliates. Part III (Youth), was distributed to all affiliates that operate youth programs in
December, 2014. Included in this correspondence was a memorandum explaining the survey process,
sample cover letters for affiliate use, and links to SurveyMonkey, an online data collection and
organizing site, for online data entry at the affiliate program level.
In compliance with Compeer Best Practices, Compeer Inc. requested all eligible affiliates administer the
surveys to clients, volunteers, and referring mental health professionals. Affiliates were asked to
administer the surveys as soon as possible, given the understanding that survey results would be due to
Compeer Inc. on April 1, 2015.

Part II - Adult Program Findings
Survey Part II – Adults
Overview
Part II of the Compeer Annual Survey focuses on the impact the Compeer Program has on adult clients based on
input from the client, the volunteer, and the referring mental health professional (MHP). As such, Part II of the
survey is distributed to these three constituency groups. The impact of the Compeer Friendship is explored primarily
through thirteen (13) attributes. Survey respondents are asked to rate their level of agreement with the 13 attributes
on a five point scale, ranging from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree. Respondents were also given the option to
note that a particular attribute was Not a Goal / Focus Area.
Respondents were also asked a number of Yes / No questions regarding additional impacts the friendship has had on
their life, as well as open-ended questions regarding satisfaction with the program / services.
Analysis
A total of fourteen (14) programs submitted their results to Part II of the survey. This represents 70% of the twenty
(20) eligible programs at the time of this report.
Adult Findings
The first set of questions in Part II of the survey asks the respondent to identify their level of agreement with a series
of attributes’ impact on the client. The results of this component of the survey are given from the perspective of the
client, the volunteer, and the referring mental health professional.

Part III - Youth Program Findings
Survey Part III – Youth
Overview
Part III of the Compeer Annual Survey focuses on the impact the Compeer Program has on youth clients, based on input
from the client, the client’s parent / guardian, the volunteer, and the referring mental health professional. As such, Part III
of the survey is distributed to these four constituency groups. The impact of the Compeer youth mentoring relationship is
explored primarily through seventeen (17) attributes. Survey respondents are asked to rate their level of agreement with
the 17 attributes on a five point scale, ranging from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree. Respondents were also given
the option to note that a particular attribute was Not a Goal / Focus Area.
Respondents were also asked a number of Yes / No questions regarding additional impacts the mentorship has had on
their life, as well as open-ended questions regarding satisfaction with the program / services.
Youth Findings
The first set of questions in Part III of the survey asks the respondent to identify their level of agreement with a series of
attributes’ impact on the client. The results of this component of the survey are given from the perspective of the client,
the parent/guardian, the volunteer and the referring mental health professional.
Youth Client Findings
Youths spent an average of 5.2 hours a month with their Compeer Mentor in 2014 in NYS.

grow as a person.
none
Made me realize to not be so quick to judge, and has taken me out of my comfort zone on many
occasions.
Rewarding
My family asks about Veronica and has all met her and are concerned for her! I'm very connected
to her family and getting to know them.
It's rewarding to see her enjoying our time together and expose her to new activities.
it's hard to deal with her. I do the best I can. she has improved in some areas but not enough
I have had many compeer friends always good. I am now unable to continue. Very sad. I will
need and Vivian has found a compeer friend for me. now
we are very different and much the same
we help each other in difficult situations
only helping her and being present is good for me
helped me with my problems
helping him
we are good friends
my friend has more of a life with me as a friend
seeing how much closer she is with her family
in a very heartfelt way
enjoyment with a great guy
Have a good sharing relationship
Compeer program is very rewarding. I am happy to be of help to my Compeer friend
Made a friend that I didn't expect to have
it makes me less self-centered more giving
mostly she has become my unrelated aunt
Fulfills my need to give back to the community.
It reminds me what is important and keeps me young.
I am more grateful for everything
I have made a difference in her life.
It has helped me to be more understanding.

Jackie has a family of her own now. It is amazing how much the girl loves to be with me too.
I've enjoyed doing something for others.
Makes me feel that my problems are not too bad and I can work them out.
I appreciate the opportunity to share time and friendship with my friend. Promotes considerable
opportunities of under-standing and being a team member.
It makes me feel that I am still able to do something of value, however small, as I age myself, but
it is also more stressful to visit the nursing home and see the levels of disability as I move closer
to that point myself.
in many ways
Shirley and I act as a team. Out of respect to one another, we typically do not finish each other's
sentences but we could!
in more positive ways
It's made me more empathetic toward people's physical, mental and financial situations and how
people must cope with these daily.
It has become not an arranged match, but a real friendship. My friend has been so supportive and
helpful to me after my husband passed away last year.
I'm more active in the program.
We have become good friends.
I'm more compassionate.
I've learned about mental health.
I made a friend.
William has made me much more patient. Everything moves slow around him.
Because of Tyler's slow speech I have learned to listen carefully. That has continued with anyone
I listen to.
I get satisfaction by seeing Eric grow mentally.
She has become a real friend. We actually help each other in many areas.
Tasha and I spend a lot of time on the phone, shopping, she is fun to be with!
we have a good bond
Mary is a valued friend but she is unwilling to return many of my phone calls. We planned to go
mall walking on her day off but she didn't show up.
confidence
It has helped me feel better about my reason for being here. It has also helped with my own
issues because I actually have someone to talk to who understands what I go through and deal
with
It continues to influence my life daily in a positive way every day!
Gives my life meaning and I have made a life long friend.

friend not able to get around and walk much
very worthwhile
Highly recommend the program!
no fault of Compeer, MH counseling is far too passive, no goals, no action plan
Everyone is very kind.
There is almost no "program"-no connection to Compeer staff. Compeer has become part of a
larger part of a larger program and it has been "lost"
This is my 2nd match, after my 1st friend passed away I didn't think I could have another match
that perfect but Ben and I are a great match and I am glad I gave it a try.

It's been a very good experience. I am so glad I decided to do this back in 2005 and met Veronica
and her family.
Compeer is a force for good on many levels for all age groups.
Except quit having holiday parties on Sundays.
A lot of information is provided regarding events, etc.
Wonderful positive relationships & creation of opportunities.
Compeer is needed in the community.
good organization
Monthly newsletters are very helpful, and staff is always very friendly and able to help!
Worship with Molly has been a ray of sunshine in my life!
Extremely! Levister is a great guy!

We are both less lonely, we joke about this!
I think I am less lonely and isolated as well
she is still shy but less isolated
She is growing by leaps and bounds
he tells me his life is 90% better after meeting me
My friend participates in senior activities on her own and religious events with her sister at times.
I haven't witnessed the change, but Mitch has told me that he was very introverted and autistic
and is much better now.
He is naturally outgoing
I think she is always optimistic and outgoing.
Pat is definitely more open with me but is still hesitant to the new things, especially at places
where there are many people.
She's opened up a lot since 2005 and has grown more. I think she has had more enjoyable
