About Compeer
Compeer, Inc. is an international 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in 1973 in Rochester, New
York. In 2014, Compeer had more than fifty affiliate locations located in communities throughout the
United States, Australia, and Canada.
Every Compeer affiliate serves adults in mental health recovery through its core service: one-to-one
supportive friendship. Through this matched relationship, Compeer Friends commit to meet once / week
for one hour for one year – most last longer. Meetings occur in natural settings using natural supports
(i.e., enjoying a walk together, meeting for coffee, playing checkers or tennis, exploring a library).
Based on the time-honored tradition that the support of friends is healing, Compeer affiliates “make
friends and change lives.”
The Compeer Model
The Compeer Model was developed using the three elements of support – relatedness, autonomy,
competence. Research done by Richard M. Ryan, et al, a professor in the Department of Clinical and
Social Sciences in Psychology at the University of Rochester shows that where these elements are
present in relationships, people feel more secure, emotionally open, and enjoy greater well-being and
mental health.
Named a “best-practices model for recovery” by the American Psychological Association, the Compeer
Model is creative, flexible and adaptable to demographic populations, such as youth, veterans, and older
adults. Currently, fourteen (14) Compeer affiliates offer youth services.
In late 2010, CompeerCORPS, a veteran-to-veteran peer mentoring programme began serving United
States military veterans in New York State. In 2014, Pennsylvania affiliates began offering the
programme to their veterans.
Compeer affiliate programme outcomes include social inclusion, community integration, and
community participation, preparation for work or school, decreased use of or need for crisis services,
increased independence. For youth the outcomes monitored are increased self-esteem, resistance to peer
pressure, resistance to drugs/alcohol, improved conflict management, and an increased awareness of
actions.
The Compeer Model is included in the United States Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Service Administration National Registry of Evidencebased Programs and Practices.

Compeer’s Mission
Compeer develops, delivers and supports model programmes that inspire and engage communities
through the power of volunteer friends and mentors of our Compeer affiliate programmes to improve
the quality of life for adults, children, and families who strive for good mental health.
Compeer provides supportive leadership to its community-based Compeer Programs throughout the
United States, Australia, and Canada.
The objectives of Compeer are to support our affiliate programmes through programme expertise,
branding, and marketing communication and to grow our current base of programmes, by providing a
cost effective solution to communities.
Compeer serves and supports our affiliate programmes with programme start-up training and best
practice management, timely news and information; research, data and statistics, volunteer recruitment
strategies, regional and national conferences, and web-conference educational series.
Through our time-tested model and evidence-based practices of supportive friendship and mentoring,
Compeer creates programmes to meet the diverse needs of communities that want to improve and
positively impact the lives of individuals and families living with mental health challenges.
Compeer's community based programmes serve adults, veterans and their families, youth (transition age
youth, mentoring children of prisoners, and at risk youth) and the elderly with volunteer mentoring and
supportive friendship programmes. Our programmes are measured annually and our outcomes are
consistently proven effective year after year through positive survey results on individuals' improved
self-esteem; reintegration into family, home, faith and community; increased likelihood of employment;
and overall quality of life.
Survey Objectives
On an annual basis, Compeer administers a series of surveys via its affiliate programmes. Completion of
the annual survey process is a requisite component of compliance with Compeer’s Best Practices,
outlined in the Licensing Agreement, signed at programme startup and renewed annually.
The primary objectives of these surveys are to:
 Gain an understanding of the demographic and programmatic composition of its affiliate
programmes,
 Gauge the satisfaction of Compeer’s constituents (clients, volunteers, mental health professionals
and parents/guardians) with the Compeer Program, and
 Gauge the satisfaction of Compeer affiliates with the services provided by Compeer.
Through each of these surveys, Compeer also seeks to identify key strengths and improvement
opportunities for strategic focus in coming years.

In November of 2014 Compeer distributed an electronic version of Part II of the survey to all Compeer
affiliates. Part III was also distributed to all affiliates that administer youth programmes in December,
2014. Included in this correspondence was a memorandum explaining the survey process, sample cover
letters for affiliate use, and links to SurveyMonkey, an online data collection and organising site, for
online data entry at the affiliate programme level.
Compeer requested that all affiliate programmes administer the surveys to all clients, volunteers and
referring mental health professionals affiliated with a one-to-one match that had been active for at least
six months. Affiliates were asked to administer the surveys as soon as possible, given the understanding
that survey results would be due to Compeer on April 1, 2015.
In January 2015, Compeer distributed Parts I and IV of the annual survey to be completed by affiliate
programme directors.

Survey Part I – Service Statistics
Overview
Part I of the Compeer Annual Survey focuses on the Compeer affiliate programmes and their
characteristics. Each programme director is asked to complete Part I of the survey. Programme
characteristics requested in Part I of the survey include staffing, budget, services offered, populations
served, as well as other basic information. Part I of the survey also requests each programme’s service
statistics, which includes an overview of the number of clients served for each service type.
Analysis
A total of nine (9) Australian programmes submitted their results to Part I of the survey. This represents
90.0% of eligible programmes at the time of reporting.
Findings
Services Offered (Chart 1): details the types of programmes offered across Compeer affiliate
programmes based upon responses to Part I. Compeer’s core service offering, Adult 1:1 matching, is
offered by all affiliates and this is true in Australia. In the United States and Canada other affiliates offer
other services as listed below. Australia has one affiliate that offers the second most frequently offered
service, Compeer Calling, and one Australian affiliate has a Youth 1:1 matching programme (but did
not supply survey data).

Australia Adult Survey
Survey Part II – Adults
Overview
Part II of the Compeer Annual Survey focuses on the impact the Compeer Program has on adult clients,
based on input from the client, the volunteer, and the referring mental health professional (MHP). As
such, Part II of the survey is distributed to these three constituency groups. The impact of the Compeer
Friendship is explored primarily through thirteen (13) attributes. Survey respondents are asked to rate
their level of agreement with the 13 attributes on a five point scale, ranging from Strongly Disagree to
Strongly Agree. Respondents were also given the option to note that a particular attribute was not a
Goal / Focus Area.
Respondents were also asked a number of Yes / No questions regarding additional impacts the
friendship has had on their life, as well as open-ended questions regarding satisfaction with the
programme / services.
Analysis
A total of nine (9) programmes submitted their results to Part II of the survey. This represents 90% of the eligible
programmes reporting.
Adult Findings
The first set of questions in Part II of the survey asks the respondent to identify their level of agreement
with a series of attributes’ impact on the client. The results of this component of the survey are given
from the perspective of the client, the volunteer and the referring mental health professional. The data
included for Part II of the survey was reported from the nine (9) Australian affiliate programmes.

made a friend
Felt I was not alone if I had problems. She helped me process my problems. Improved social skills.
Always felt encouraged. She made conversation easy.
more confident
gaining more enthusiasm
Nice to have regular contact and conversation
I have someone I trust and can talk about anything to
I have slowly become more confident
Due to my health I have been unable to participate and exacerbated by Rose's inability to make the
time for me. Last year (2014) contact time went down due to Compeer volunteer family issues and
their involvement in her church duties and work commitments/studies have impacted on our
connection and I feel that (although happy to work with her) I can handle 3-4 visits a year based on
the knowledge of what she does (having too much on her plate) but I would consider another partner
if possible as I would like to go out for coffee and things like that rather than just attend compeer
events.
I enjoy contact with my "friend"
I have benefitted mentally
I like my Compeer Friend but she doesn't let me talk about the things I want to talk about - my fears
Just to talk to and get me involved with the church. Not interested.
I happily meet each fortnight
beginning good, later disappointing because Chrissy is never available or give me a call
I feel more social connection so Compeer makes me happier than before
I have developed more interests
talking and having someone I get along with
good ways
because more assertive
helped me in confidence - communicating with normal people
She is a true friend that I have never had.
Friendship is good. Often we see a film which I enjoy. Good way of socializing
becoming more aware of everyday situations since being sober for 29 months. thank you.
more outgoing
I have made a dear friend who is uplifting to be around
It's a good friendship
We get to make a breakfast together
My friend has good advice
A LOT
Mateship. I have an easy going friendly relationship with my Compeer Friend. With casual chit-chat
and a caring responsive nature, my Compeer Friend brings out the best in me.

It has been good. Able to share experiences and visit museums and physical activities
to meet people
The main person I deal with in regards to social contact is Jack D. He is an organised, faithful
Catholic who provides his time these days since retiring on a volunteer basis for a few charities and
hospitals. Jack sees me on average about once a week for about 2 hours each time. We go for drives
in his car to various cafes, on the northern side of Sydney. We go to various cafes for coffee and
perhaps cake, sandwiches or biscuits, from Curl Curl Beach to Balmoral Beach and then from
Balmain to the Sydney Fish markets where we shared a fish basket and drink. Since petrol for cars
has gone up in price we have been going to cafes closer to home. Jack lives in Lane Cove as well.
We have been going to cafes largely in the Narrabeen, Cremorne Point and Lane Cove West area.
Sometimes I might have a beer while Jack a red wine. I have enjoyed going to Compeer events as
well. Here I have met some very friendly people I believe the staff are fine people, the clients,
volunteers and staff all like getting together and sharing a meal and doing extra activities like
karaoke, lawn bowls and line dancing (some people doing and some supporting). Some of the
friends (matched) i have met include Helen D, and Jenny J, Pam B and Anne and Wayne S and
Michael O. Amy is a helpful and pleasant Compeer staff member.

My volunteer has inspired me to become more involved in education, Volunteering - community
and has assisted me through what was a very rocky road at the beginning in terms of health and
confidence issues; these areas in my life have also improved.
Stable
Given me exercise. Broadened my outlook on life
Being more social
I think positive
More self-confidence. More positive beliefs in society generally. Someone to bounce ideas off.
My friendship with my Compeer partner has developed and strengthened. We feel warmth and
compassion towards each other
It has given me a great friendship that has become real, not just in the bounds of Compeers
restrictions. I have so much more social contact even though I am still housebound with
agoraphobia, I have trust in my friend and am able to go places with him.

Perfectly
We could be twins even though we are going in different directions
We have different interests
Enjoy his company
We ring every fortnight. Sometimes we meet for coffee at the local shopping centre. I have just
had a kidney transplant so I am a bit restricted on where I go. Ying is at Uni and she goes to
work and has a husband and two children to look after so her time is precious. I am grateful to
hear from her. I help Ying with her English as I was a teacher.
She changes the subject - not the same interests
She has children. I don't have custody of mine.

great satisfaction in being able to make a meaningful contribution.
It has been rewarding to witness/be involved in the gradual improvement of our person who had,
essentially, slipped through the cracks of society, largely, been forgotten, then to re-emerge and
begin to get involved with activities, such as playing social tennis.
been able to relieved some loneliness in somebody life even if its one hour per week

their disabilities.
It has taught me more compassions and understanding of people around me in general
Has been a rewarding experience

Made me be more empathetic towards others and improved my active listening skills. My mental
and physical health has improved as a result of what I do through Compeer
I really enjoy spending time with my friend and I find it enriches my life.
It has been very rewarding to feel that I am able to offer an additional support to Susanne. I have
enjoyed her friendship and have gained more personally from the experience than I had expected.
Being able to contribute my time and share it with another person who might need it more
Enhanced awareness. Allowed me scope to engage the 'crazy' part of me
It reminds me to appreciate the life that I lead. It makes me feel valuable and helpful.
It started well, however, my 'Friend' has become physically incapacitated & now requires 24 hr
nursing home care. She is wheelchair-dependent & is unable to consider extra physical acitivity.
Positively. Have developed a strong liking for my new friend and I believe I have ginned as much
out of the programme as she has
I find that I she calls on me for advise or to discuss matters that she is not confident about.
I have learnt more about Mental Illness & how it affects people - also learnt to be more tolerant
towards others.
I have a greater understanding of the everyday challenges facing someone living with a mental
illness.
I feel very special to be valued by my friend, who has now become a close friend. It's also improved
my flexibility and understanding of mental health issues
Self-satisfaction by helping others
My Compeer Friend is an enigma. It may be the result of his medication, but he has no interests.
That is "not few interests"; that is "no Interests". He doesn’t watch TV, listen to the radio, read
newspapers. He goes to his mother’s place each Friday; she prepares his meals for the week; and he
then goes home each Monday. He catches a bus to Coogee each Thursday, walks the beach and
catches the bus home. He and I meet each week for coffee and to play cards. I'm sure he enjoys our
time together however he never expresses any feelings.
Helped me appreciate the challenges of mental health, and how seriously it impacts on individuals.
Belinda is my friend, and I am her friend, and we know that we always will be there for each other.
This is an unexpected bonus!
Feels good to help someone who is isolated to get more connected to the community
be more understanding of others, especially people with mental disability

Apart from 1 visit in the community, my Compeer Friend has been in hospital for the duration of
our friendship. I continue to visit in hospital, as occasionally, I feel I make a difference to her
confidence.
I have been involved in COMPEER for over 12 years and it has increased my understanding of
mental health problems and the struggles of people who live with them.
It has given me a practical insight into the challenges facing people with my friend’s challenges.
We have become genuine friends, so it has increased my number of friends by one. I expect we will
continue to meet for as long as we both feel up to it.
gave me satisfaction that I am contributing to making someone else happier and more engaged
He became a friend. I feel I am doing something worthwhile.
Always wanted to help others. This is making m feel better about myself, as I can see that I changed
someone's life for better.
Community service senses of giving back
More understanding about what it really means to someone to have a mental illness
I struggle to make the time at the moment but I always feel glad that I did
Made me more accepting and less judgmental and self-centered.
It has given me better understanding of mental illness and taken me outside my comfort zone to
work one on one which is rewarding.
friendship
Helped me learn about and understand exactly how a mental illness affects people.
Increased my tolerance for people with a disability
Helped me to gain insight into mental health
It has made me aware of the difficulties encountered by persons trying to readjust into society
Helped me appreciate what I have. Helped improve my listening and observational skills. A
fulfillment of being able to contribute to someone’s wellbeing
It has developed into a real friendship where she is one of my closest friends
It makes me count my blessings every day and appreciate the small things in life that I used to take
for granted
I enjoy the coffees we have together.
Greater understanding of some mental illness issues.
It has been very rewarding and I have got more out of it personally than expected.
She is becoming more confident, mostly, in being around other people.
I'm a better, more selfless, more empathic person
It keeps me grounded. Makes me feel that I am making a difference in her life in a very small way (
I wish I had more time)
made me more understanding and given me a more positive outlook
It's given me a best friend and someone whom I can confide in as well.
I feel I am making a difference. I know my friend values our friendship and looks forward to our
meetings and that makes me feel wanted and needed.
Made me more aware of the difficulties and hardship of someone with severe mental illness
In some ways it's draining my friend is very HIGH MAINTENANCE but to see the change is
rewarding
I am realising, and trying to be patient with, the difficulty of having a direct effect on my friend. I
see that his attitudes and behaviours are innate, and not easily changed.
Sense of purpose
I enjoy my compeer experience. I enjoy the walk and the talk. It is also a reminder of how random
mental illness can be, and how it could just as easily be me having to deal with it.

Compeer is a great programme
Maree's friendship has been very rewarding and has introduced me to her flatmate Kim who is
lovely
Compeer - very good
very committed and supportive
try very hard to help
great programme and support
Compeer provides a stable relationship for companions - mental health workers frequently change
and there is little continuity
Very happy and I feel a lot of support from the organisation.
I have little to do with Compeer for a couple of years
it is a rewarding programme
it is a great and rewarding community service
My Compeer Friend is a good friend
There are no events in the Sydney City area on a monthly basis.
Compeer is run very professionally
Competent staff members, especially Amy, are very supportive
Great concept. Chance to meet other volunteers who have the same interests
It has been well worth while & a whole new learning experience & satisfying that I have made a
difference to someone's life
Wonderful team, fully engaged and supportive.
The time commitment was difficult for me
I feel I need more support in communicating with my Compeer Friend while she is in hospital.
My Compeer contact, Amy Bastes, is ideally suited to her job in every way and makes the
experience of dealing with Compeer a pleasure.
very well organised
I think the programme is wonderful!!!

good match
movies, lunch and chatting
Our variety of outings is somewhat limited because of my friend's lack of mobility
We look forward to our meetings having a coffee + discussing current affairs/ movies/ books etc!

share same interests, similar age is good
similar personalities & caring, respectful natures
would have liked to have achieved her goal of visiting the theatre
All good
We both like looking at art and having coffee
Incredibly well matched
My Compeer Friend is very different from me and younger but we get along fine as we have some
shared interests.
We're compatible to a certain degree
the relationship can be quite rewarding
communication is very rewarding
We get on well and have similar interests
Extremely good match
I love being with her... good company
I've been matched with someone who has similar interests
Even though she wouldn't have been an obvious choice
We are very different but I find him interesting and enjoy his company
I'm a physical person and my friend avoids any form of physical activity.
Due to my 'friend's' immobility & care needs she is unable to leave her Nursing Home.
We are about the same age and have very similar interests
Similar interests - well suited
Even though there is a large age difference
We have very diverse interests but that helps us have more to talk about.
Not a bad match but not much in common
My Compeer Friend was a good match, until she went into hospital. I feel sometimes my visits are
a waste of time and other times I feel its going well as we have a few laughs.
Same sense of humour, tastes in music broadly, enjoyment of eating out and visiting the sea side,
etc.
Similar interests and beliefs
Works well for both of us.
We're perfectly suited and she's wonderful company
We don't have a lot in common but we do get along and have fun
good that he is local, and enjoys a chat

gets out more
she enjoys getting dressed up for a Compeer event
with my company, my friend loves going to restaurants
this has improved with consistent contact and correct medication
says that no-one else visits but hesitant to encourage others
she now participates in community work
it really depends
If she was not physically limited, we would go on outings like we used to. her family are a great
support for her too with visits.
Talks of things he has done between our visits, it has givinen him confidence.
Still do the same things
Maybe
He has recently started to relax in this situation and makes more efort to engage in activities.
She appears to be so but not quite sure if it does actually happen.
My friend has health issues as well as depression which is why I've seen an actual decline in
activities.
hopefully this will gradually change
My Compeer Friend has increased her circle of friends
Still has very limited contact with others outside of the health professionals and family.
He has enrolled in and completed peer support courses and has done the training to become a
Compeer volunteer
Susanne joined the programme because she felt a lot of her friends didn't understand her depression,
but she already does have a reasonable number of friends and a couple of very supportive people in
her life so this was not such an issue...although sometimes I would love for her to have a more
active social life it is not something she would like to persue at this stage.
My Compeer Friend has stepped out of her comfort zone
Somewhat the same
He is a very outgoing person so it has always been a high level of activity for him.
She's needs more than me, and has said so.
Since entering hospital, she has become more isolated, lonely and less outgoing.
Her growing physical problems affect her greatly.
He just needed the experience of a third person sharing experiences with him.
Better but still reluctant to venture out at times
sometimes yes & sometimes no
She has always been a very active and outgoing person but lacks self confidence
He still feel isolated and some times show frustration about not being able to develop his skills to
get work
to a small extent
He has become more aware, I think, of the ways and reasons for his isolation. But unable and/or
unwilling to change.

art/ craft/ poetry workshop - could utilise volunteer and companion skills
perhaps an evening meal
group learning activities
movie night
Picnic
Just a simple afternoon tea in the local area on weekends. I work during the week
Outside speakers
As I don't enjoy driving I prefer local activities
Current programme ok
Mental health seminars
not much - they already have enough events
I think Compeer does a very good job; no suggestions for improvement
group activities would be quite good for them to get in touch with each others apart from
regular meeting with their own Compeer volunteers
having a concert with volunteers and friends of volunteers
the activities put together by Compeer have been great
see other comments (annual)
all okay
movie days
sporting afternoons, table tennis, visiting weekend festivals i.e. music in the parks organised by
councils
something to do with easter ; bingo game afternoon ; trivia (team game) afternoon/ evening
group activities that volunteers can meet each other and to share their stories together
movie night, high tea
cooking classes; music concerts (classical)
Social
All good, maybe a BBQ on a weekend.
More smaller group catch ups. Eg encouraging all the friendships in the Marrickville or Pymble
or Bankstown area to meet every once in a while as a group. More opportunities for the
volunteers to regularly meet up. I don't think a Compeer staffer needs to attend these, just to
help facilitate them to happen eg set up a date and suggest a venue.
Occasional discussion group around helpful strategies for supporting friends, maybe could
involve dinner - Compeer might like to order in some food???
It is difficult to involve my friend in activities because of his anxieties.
bus trips, weekends away
a weekend away
Monthly events/activities in the city area.
movies, walks, Gym
not sure
This is enough for the moment
Having the funds to organise social trips and more outings for volunteers.

An event that encourage people especially competent friends to be more creative. My friend
recently made a nice artwork which she showed off at another community event. It is a good
motivation for competent friends.
Sufficient social opportunity
More of the same
Something on a weekend afternoon...maybe a picnic? Although I work some weekends so still
could not guarantee attendance!
Maybe coffee catch ups during the weekends and not only work day as it's difficult for me to
join during work hours
Picnics, bushwalking.
Morning teas would be nice
Present activities are very satisfactory
No need to change.
Accessible, daytime events, ie BBQs.
Not sure as I do not have a broad enough understanding of the makeup of friends and volunteers
to be able to suggest something that would have popular appeal.
currently satisfactory
Not interested in any
Not sure.
Training up skill
More local events that she would be able to go to during the week day times even though I
would be unable to attend, I think she would benefit from being more pro active with other
members and not just waiting for me.
More BBQ's would be nice
unsure
I think that the current activities are well suited and sufficient
DON'T KNOW. aS LONG AS THE FRIENDS ENJOY THEM.
Board games, trivia, musicals / shows
Compeer is doing its best I believe.
I'm not that interested in attending events. I just like to catch up with my Compeer Friend
Compeer Games
Movie night perhaps.
I think what Compere does is excellent but i have not been able to convince my friend to
participate in anything extra.
My friend is now in a nursing home and unable to attend functions
Drop ins, coole mornings, picnics
What about bowling?

it is a wonderful organisation
I have done so
Simply because of the rough period Maree is going through at this time
the experience is very rewarding
positive input very important for people in this programme
it's a great way to help someone and meet new people/ socialise and have fun
I have talked about my involvement with numerous people
I have, to a few friends, they often say "I couldn't do that, I would not be good at it".
But would depend on the person
I often have... unfortunately many feel confronted by mental illness and the very concept is quite
threatening for many. I don't understand this.
I already have. Four have become volunteers and more are considering
I would only recommend Compeer to those who have some knowledge or experience in Mental
Health
To those I believe would find the experience mutually rewarding for them and their friend.
I am already doing this at my work place.
Absolutely !!!
My daughter is now a Compeer volunteer

many positives
As the mother of this person, I would like to see more assistance given, but my daughter’s sleeppatterns and OCD makes this very difficult both for myself and Compeer to alter things
dramatically.
Highly recommend it
want to do afternoon tea - not what Compeer Friend wants to do
very interested in her role
Thank you. Very happy!
Compeer has provided client with increased social network sand created opportunities she would
never had been able to attend. Due to complex mental health issues, some areas wer not able to be
met.
Compeer is vital to recovery. without fledgling friendships, consumers have little reason to begin
the often arduous path of recovery.
L. has been great with communication
