ASSIGNMENT: Homework 7: Understanding Engineering Ethics DUE DATE: As indicated by instructor TYPE & LOCATION DUE: Email PowerPoint EFFORT: Individual POINTS: 25 CATEGORY: Homework DESCRIPTION: This assignment provides the students an opportunity to explore the world of engineering ethics. Students will review the Introduction to Engineering Ethics PowerPoint and read Chapter 15 in the text prior to completing this assignment. There are two portions to the assignment: 1. Professional Codes. Beginning with the material discussed in the first part of the PowerPoint Presentation Introduction to Engineering Ethics, consider how these codes will affect your professional life. You will create a ONE (and only ONE) PowerPoint slide summarizing your thoughts. This may have graphics (be sure to cite any graphics not authored by you), but must clearly capture your understanding about the responsibilities and characteristics of professional engineers. Some questions to get you started. Note that you might not want to try and answer all three, but may find it easier to focus on one or two: a. What are the characteristics of the ideal professional engineer? What are the engineer’s most important professional responsibilities? Give specific examples. Explain your reasoning. b. What people and experiences have shaped your understanding of these characteristics and responsibilities? How have they done so? Describe specific incidents or actions you or others have taken c. To what extent do you feel that you have these characteristics and are prepared for these responsibilities? Why or why not? How would you know that you are a professional engineer? Provide specific criteria. 2. Risk and Liability Assessment. After reviewing the second part of the PowerPoint on risk and liability assessment, create a fault tree similar to the example for a smart phone. Select two separate issues of your choice. Include at least three levels of detail. You must use a flow chart of some type, but do not have to follow the format in the slides. DELIVERABLE: You will have two PowerPoint slides: 1. Professional Codes PowerPoint 2. Fault Tree PowerPoint Email both in one document to your instructor and teaching assistant prior to the due date and time.
