ABSTRACT
This visit will measure the alignment between the STIS instrument CCD and the HST FGSs by taking dithered STIS 50CCD images of a star with
highly accurate astrometric positions (UCAC-2, or Tycho, or Hipparcos or better) to determine STIS CCD to FGS offset and rotation angle. The
guide stars used should have astrometric accuracy comparable to that of the target. Interleaving external images and lamp images of a reference slit
will ensure that external target is properly registered with respect to the STIS aperture plane. This test is intended to be conducted during the BEA
(bright earth avoidance) period, so sufficient targets and contingency visits are defined to ensure that there are always available targets in both the
northern and southern BEA zones during the SMOV period.
OBSERVING DESCRIPTION
Targets selected for this program are from the Tycho catalog and have V_T magnitudes between 10.5 and 10.7 and B_T-V_T colors between 0.1 and
0.3. Each target will be observed using a series of 0.3 s CCD subexposures with a sub-sampled 4 point box pattern with the clear (50CCD) aperture
and GAIN=4. The pattern will be first done at the center of the detector, and then repeated with pos targ offsets of (12,12), (-12,12), (-12,-12), and
(12,-12) arc-seconds. Each subexposure should collect abou 100,000 electrons in the peak pixel or about 360,000 electrons total. These exposures

will be interleaved with a number of HITM lamp exposures taken through the 0.2X0.2 reference aperture. At the end of the visit, a STIS target ACQ
will be performed.
This proposal should execute after STIS-08 (11383), "Aperture Wheel and Lamp tests" have completed, but there is no need to wait to see or analyse
the data from any previous proposal before executing this one.
Ten targets and associated visits have been defined; visits 01 thru 05 should cover all times for southern BEA (bright earth avoidance) zone; visits 06
thru 10 should cover all times for the northern BEA zone. Only one of these eight visits should be executed. Note that if STIS-11 (11386) executes
immediately after this proposal, it may be useful to select a target for this proposal that is in the same hemisphere as the target used for STIS-11. All
targets in this proposal have coordinates and proper motions from the Tycho cataloge. The guide stars used for this proposal must also have accurate
astrometric coordinates (Tycho if possible, but at least UCAC-2 or better).
