Independence through Education
In January 2006, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and
Pikes Peak Community College, in cooperation with American National
Bank, announced a new merit-based college scholarship program for
Colorado residents.
The scholarship program, one of the largest
in the state, was made possible by the Kane
Family Foundation and its benefactors,
Wanden and Andy Kane.
The Kanes were Fountain, Colorado,
ranchers who believed in independence
through education. Together for more than

family homestead east of Fountain. At 19, he bought 40 acres that had
been sold for back taxes and gave it to his parents. This is the first known
example of Andy Kane’s skills as a trader in addition to skills honed as
a cowboy, horseman and rancher. He performed as a professional rodeo
cowboy, ranched, and bred registered quarter horses known throughout
the region for their quality. As a rodeo performer and rancher, roping
was his specialty.
Andy Kane was known for his memory, his skill as a livestock trader, and
for his quick study. Though he was without a formal education, he and
his wife, Wanden believed education a key to life-long independence.
Wanden Mathews La Farge Kane was born in New York to wealthy
parents who ensured she received the finest education possible, first with
private tutors as the family traveled Europe and, later, at Columbia
University. She spoke seven languages and translated Dante from early
Italian before attending college.
