Text: Reasoning Skills for Everyday Life, 2nd edition,
by James F. Burkhart
ISBN: 9780536864819
Course Description: Designed to bring incoming
students up to a minimum competency in
quantitative and qualitative skills. It includes such
topics as logic, arithmetic, graphing, statistics,
problem solving skills, and algebraic skills. The
course is one of the means to satisfy the
Qualitative and Quantitative Reasoning
requirement.
Attendance: Attendance will be monitored. Students must remain in class for the entire duration of
class time.
Exercises: The text has exercises that help the student practice the concepts learned in lecture. It is
expected that these will be completed individually either in class during designated times at the end
of each day or done at home if not completed in class. We will go over the exercise solutions at the
start of the next class time, and students may self-check their answers before turning them in.
Completed exercises count toward the overall course grade.
Exams: Due to the compressed nature of this course, exams and

lecture will both occur on some days. On the days on which an

exam is scheduled, students will be given a short review/question
Exam
90%
time before the exam is given. No cue cards are allowed, so the
average
required material should be well understood and/or memorized at
this point. If a student finishes before the exam time is over, they will have an in-class activity
related to the course that they can do until the lecture resumes after the exam period. Each exam
covers only the material from the corresponding chapter. Exam 4 is not cumulative.
Grades: In summary, your grade will computed as shown in table 1. Percentages are converted to a
letter grade as shown in table 2.

Calculators: A calculator will be required for this course. It is strongly recommended that the student
use a TI-30Xa which is available in the UCCS bookstore. This will allow standardized instruction
on its use. Other types of calculators will require the student’s own familiarization with the device.
Calculators will be allowed during exams. Cell-phone calculators are not allowed.
Questions, comments: It is my hope that you will feel comfortable asking questions in class.
Chances are that if you are unsure about some topic, there are others who have a similar question.
I would like the class to be as interactive as possible.
Academic Integrity: Although study groups and peer learning are encouraged, all work performed for
a grade in this class should reflect your own understanding and effort. Violation of the UCCS
academic integrity policy may result in consequences ranging from a zero on the assignment up to
failure of the course, depending on the particular situation.
Cell phones, classroom behavior: During class time there should be no use of cell phones,
iPods/iPads, headphones, laptops, or any other technology. These devices must be turned off and
stored away. Talking to your neighbor is distracting to me and to those around you so please keep
discussions to a minimum.
