Text: Engineering Mechanics: Statics & Dynamics, 13th
ed., by Hibbeler ISBN: 9780132915489
(or dynamics-only version ISBN: 9780132911276)
Course Description: (This is the second
semester of a two-semester course covering
engineering statics and dynamics.)
Dynamics of a particle. Kinetics of a system of
particles. Kinematics of rigid bodies in two and
three dimensions. Free and forced vibrations
with and without viscous damping.
Credit Hours: 3
Prerequisite: MAE 2103 (Eng. Mech. I)
Co requisite: Math 340 (Intro to Diff. Eq.)
Attendance: Attendance will not be monitored. It is each student’s responsibility to cover any
material due to missed lectures. Call the Snow Line (255-3346) for school closures. Arrangements
should be made in advance for absence due to religious or spiritual observances.
Homework: Homework will be due at the start of class. You will typically have at least one week
after homework is assigned. Study groups are acceptable and encouraged, but homework should
be based on individual effort and work and intermediate calculations must be shown. Homework
turned in after it is due is subject to a 10% penalty per late class period. Each homework set will
consist of around 5-7 problems from the chapter. Each problem will be assessed on a scale of 0 to
5, with partial credit given for correct procedures and deductions taken for errors, missing units or
improper format.
Format for Homework: Engineering work should be clear and easy to follow. Homework should be
arranged in numerical order, with pages numbered and name included on each page (or stapled
together). Homework and exam solutions should be organized, and answers should be clearly
marked (circled, boxed, or underlined, for example.) It is recommended that each problem contain:
(a) a brief problem statement, (b) diagrams, (c) given values, (d) values to be found, (e) equations
used, (f) solution steps, and (g) answer(s) with units.
Exams: Dates for exams are tentative, and may occur a week before or after the date indicated below.
At least a week’s notice will be given before the exam. There will be no scheduled make-up
exams. Excuses for illness or family emergencies must be communicated to the instructor prior to
the missed exam if possible. Exams are closed book, but calculators and a 3”x5” cue card will be
allowed. Exam 3 will be administered on the day of finals, and is not cumulative.
Grades: In summary, your grade will be weighted as shown. The letter

grade ranges are posted on my website. Ranges include +’s and –‘s.
Exams (3)
85%
Disabilities:
Students with disabilities should provide their letters of certification and accommodation within the
first two weeks of class. Special accommodations for tests are required a week prior to the
scheduled exam date.
Academic Integrity: Exact duplication of the homework or exam solutions of others (including other
students, instructors, or solution manuals) is considered a violation of the UCCS academic integrity
policy. Violation of this policy may result in consequences ranging from a zero on the assignment
up to failure of the course, depending on the particular situation.
Calculators:
Calculators will be allowed during exams; HOWEVER, enough INTERMEDIATE STEPS MUST
BE SHOWN to convince me that you understand how to solve the problem. Calculators with the
ability to manipulate vectors (addition, dot and cross products) are strongly recommended.
