PES 1110 General Physics I – Fall 2015 MWF 9:25-10:40am ENGR 103 Course Syllabus Instructor: Robert G. Gist Office & Hours: OCSE A-418, (Mon 11-12:15, Tue 12:15-1:15, Wed 6:15-7:15) UCCS e-mail: rgist@uccs.edu Web Site: http://www.uccs.edu/rgist Text: University Physics, 13th ed., by Young and Freedman (Ch1-11,13-14) On-line Homework (optional): Mastering Physics Course Description: Rigorous calculus-level course in classical physics for science and engineering students. Includes measurements, vectors, motion in one dimension, motion in a plane, particle dynamics, work and energy, linear and angular momentum, rotation of rigid bodies, static equilibrium, oscillation, and gravity. Credit Hours: 4 Co-requisite: Math 135 (Calculus I) Attendance: Attendance will not be monitored. It is each student’s responsibility to cover any material due to missed lectures. Call the Snow Line (255-3346) for school closures. Arrangements should be made in advance for absence due to religious or spiritual observances. Recitations: Friday class meetings will typically be application of the theory and equations learned in class. I will work example problems and help with homework assignments. Homework: Students may choose from either traditional homework (hand-written and individually graded) or on-line homework (assigned and graded on-line via the Mastering Physics program at www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com). You will typically have at least one week after homework is assigned to complete it and submit it in class or electronically via the Mastering Physics program. Study groups are acceptable and encouraged, but homework should be based on individual effort. Early homework submission is rewarded and late homework is subject to a penalty. If extreme circumstances should present themselves, consult with me as soon as possible. Each homework set will consist of around 5-7 problems from the chapter. Exams: Dates for exams are tentative. At least a week’s notice will be given before the exam. There will be no make-up exams. Any missed exam will result in a grade of zero. Excuses for illness, family emergencies, or religious observances must be communicated to the instructor prior to the missed exam, if possible. Exams are closed-book, but calculators and a 3”x5” cue card will be allowed. Exam 4 will be administered on the day of finals, and is not cumulative. Grades: In summary, your grade will be weighted as Homework average 20% shown. The letter grade ranges are posted on my Average of exams (4) 80% website. Ranges include +’s and –‘s. Disabilities: Students with a disability who require accommodations should provide a letter of accommodation from Student Enrichment Services (MH 105, x3354) within the first two weeks of the semester. Accommodations requests for tests are required a week prior to the scheduled exam. Calculators: Calculators will be allowed during exams. Some problems may require you to show your work, including formulae used. Questions, comments: It is my hope that you will feel comfortable asking questions in class. Chances are that if you are unsure about some topic, there are others who have a similar question. If you have relevant experience with a subject, please feel free to share comments with the class. Cell phones, classroom: Please show proper etiquette by turning cell phones to silent mode and keeping conversation to a minimum during lecture. Please remain in the classroom unless an emergency arises, since foot traffic in the class can be disruptive to other students. Academic Integrity: Exact duplication of the homework or exam solutions of others (including other students, instructors, or solution manuals) is considered a violation of the UCCS academic integrity policy. Violation of this policy may result in consequences ranging from a zero on the assignment up to failure of the course, depending on the particular situation. R.
