Historical Note
The Middletown IV project (1999) was a replication of two of the research surveys that had been
conducted during the original Middletown study (1924-1925) by Robert and Helen Lynd, and during the
Middletown III project: the Community Survey (1978) and the High School Survey (1977, 1989). The
Principal Investigators for the Middletown IV project were Theodore Caplow, University of Virginia;
Howard Bahr, Brigham Young University; Bruce Chadwick, Brigham Young University; Vaughn R. A.
Call, Brigham Young University; and Louis Hicks, St. Mary's College of Maryland.
The High School Survey queried respondents about the number of years they attended Muncie schools,
membership in extra-curricular activities, sex education, curriculum, grades and schoolwork, books and
magazines read that were not assigned, and future plans after high school. Respondents were also asked
about close friendships, work outside of school, activities on Sunday, and their opinions about their
relationship with their parents, and several statements about personal, political, and social issues.
For the Community Survey, respondents were asked about their residence and living in Muncie, as well as
job history, reasons to work, and the advantages gained from working. The survey also asked questions of
respondents about spouse employment and vacation, household roles, activities, and expenses, as well as
close friendships, important qualities in boys and girls, educational plans for their children, and opinions
on special topics.
In 2005, the Principal Investigators for the Middletown IV project also conducted a replication of the
1977 Kinship Survey from the Middletown III project. The 2005 survey, titled "Today's Families and
Their Relatives," followed the same methodology and included many of the same questions from the 1977
survey. Like the previous survey, the 2005 survey examined the effects of geographic separation and
other measures of family communication on the nature of parent-child contact and how it had changed
since the previous survey was completed.
The initial findings from the Middletown IV research project were summarized in Caplow, Hicks, and
Ben J. Wattenberg's book, The First Measured Century: An Illustrated Guide to Trends in America,
1900-2000 (Washington, D.C.: AEI Press, 2000), a 3-hour PBS television special, and a companion
website of the same title. Results from the Middletown IV study were also published in numerous articles.
