Use this criteria for all species. 1. In the judgement of the scaler2, the log must be from a dead tree or a dead portion of a live tree that was dead when cut3, and 2. The segment must contain a deductible defect in the scaling cylinder due to at least one of the following causes that has originated in the sapwood. a. Rotten sapwood, of the true sapwood variety, and not associated with fire scar, lightening scar, frost crack, catfaces, and so forth. 4 b. Weather checks. c. Massed wormholes (large variety). 1 Any timber which does not meet the dead criteria is considered "live". 2 Contracting Officer must notify scaler of any "live" material which due to delay in delivery to the mill appears to be dead. 3 This is usually evident by the lack of pitch beads in the sapwood on the cut end. 4 See chapter 30 for log defects and deductions.
