32 – CLASSIFICATION OF PUBLICATIONS
32.1 – Publications Versus Administrative Documents
Refer to FSM 1630.5 for the definition of publications and administrative documents.
1. Publications are produced to meet specific needs of the public, other agencies, and cooperators, as well as the Forest Service. These materials are subject to a formal publications proposal/review process. See FSM 1631.11; exhibit 01, for a list of publications subject to the formal review process.
2. Administrative documents are produced primarily for use by Forest Service employees. Printing is limited to 1,000 copies. These materials are exempt from formal proposal/review/approval procedures, but must conform to all design standards, and other applicable rules and regulations. See FSM 1631.12 for a list of items considered administrative documents. a. Distribution of administrative documents to other agencies, cooperators, individuals, or organizations which need to be kept informed of Region 4 business, must not exceed 100 copies or 10 percent of the total number of copies printed, whichever is less. b. An administrative document becomes public information (a publication) when the distribution to the public exceeds the above limits; or when the document is made available to Superintendent of Documents for public sale; or when the document is put on the World Wide Web (WWW)/Internet.
34 – APPROPRIATE SERIES
