1650.44 - Regional Foresters, Station Directors, Area Directors, Forest
Supervisors, and District Rangers
Each Region 4 unit shall maintain a media contact list for its area and issue news releases.
1651.1 - News Releases
News releases are double spaced with margins set at 12 and 90. Paragraphs are indented 7
spaces and printed in 12 pitch type. Single space the latter part of the release to avoid going to
another page. Use all capital letters for news release headlines which appear on one line. The
headline should have a subject and a verb and briefly identify the primary action being
announced. Two lines below the last line of the text, use a "#" to mark the end of the release.
Show the issuing unit's name and address on the first page as well as the full name and telephone
number of the person(s) who can supply additional information.
Forest Supervisors shall send the Regional Strategic Communications Team one copy of each
release issued. The Strategic Communications Team shall distribute copies to interested
Directors and the Regional Forester.
The Strategic Communications Team shall prepare news releases on personnel changes in the
Regional Forester, Deputy Regional Forester, Director, and Forest Supervisor assignments.
Releases on Forest Supervisor assignments shall be coordinated with the affected Forest(s).
Forests shall prepare and distribute releases on personnel changes below the Supervisor level.
When appropriate, send news releases prepared by the Strategic Communications Team in
advance to affected Forests with a notice of the planned release date. Forest Supervisors should
modify the information to fit local situations and issue a release to media on their contact lists
that will not receive the Regional release. Each Regional release shall carry a code showing
distribution. Symbols are:
WS - Wire Services
TV - Television Stations
RA - Radio Stations
WP - Weekly Newspapers
DP - Daily Newspapers
R-4 - Media indicated throughout Region
R-4 All - All media throughout the Region
The State or States covered shall be designated by the standard abbreviation.

Example:
R-4 WS DP means the release was sent to wire services and daily newspapers throughout the
Region.
ID TV RA means the release only went to television and radio stations in Idaho.
1652 - CLIPPINGS. Each Forest Supervisor shall send the Regional Strategic Communications
Team clippings of newspaper articles about or affecting Forest Service activities.
Routine clippings should be mailed at least weekly and time-sensitive clippings should be faxed
if equipment is available (FAX number 625-5483). An original or high quality copy of material
should immediately follow the fax transmittal. A staff person in the Regional Strategic
Communications Team shall screen clippings and send pertinent news articles to the Washington
Office. Include the name of the publication, date, and city and state with each clipping.
Strategic Communications Team shall prepare and distribute weekly to the Forest Supervisors a
cross-section of the submitted clippings as the "Intermountain Region Clipsheet".
