11 - REQUIREMENTS FOR WRITTEN OFFICIAL POSITION DESCRIPTIONS AND
EVALUATION STATEMENTS
11.1 - Position Descriptions
6. Position Numbers.
a. Master Record Numbers.
(1) The master record number contains six digits. Your number cannot exceed that
number.
(2) "S" is used in the first space on all Regional standard job descriptions. When the
description is not a standard description use "0."
(3) The second digit identifies the unit.
(4) The next three digits should be used in sequence, 001, 002--999.
(5) If the position involves a specialization such as a Biological Technician
(Fisheries) or a Clerk (Typing), the sixth digit of the master record number is reserved
for identifying the specialization, 03022F and 03022T. If there is no modifier, leave
the sixth digit blank.
b. Individual Position Numbers.
(1) Numbers cannot exceed eight digits.
(2) The first digit will be blank or “A” for AVUE if classified by the automated
system.
(3) The second digit will be "0" to identify Region 10.
(4) The third digit will identify the Regional Office. All numbers are generated
automatically from the Regional Human Resources Service Center.

(5) The fourth digit will identify the fiscal year the position is classified, FY 02 is "2",
FY 03 is "3", and so forth.

(6) The fifth through seventh digits will be used to identify the Area/Unit position
number. The numbering system will start over when the FY changes.
(7) Additional identical (AI) position numbers may be identified by following the
unit position number, digit 5, with the letter “A”, e.g. 014A011.
If the established number already has 8 digits, establish a new IP number with the
appropriate blocks marked to identify it as an identical position.
(8) One position number may be used for multiple-graded positions provided each
lower grade is distinguished from the target position with a letter.

16 - SUPERVISORY CERTIFICATION OF POSITION DESCRIPTIONS
16.1 - Recertification of Position Descriptions
To recertify a position description when requesting to fill for a vacant position, Form R10-620010 (2/90), 16.1 Exhibit 01, must be signed by the immediate supervisor.
