PROGRAM DESCRIPTION This program of study enables students to combine courses from various disciplines to meet employment training and retraining requirements. For example, a student interested in becoming a legal office administrator could take core courses in Office Management coupled with Legal Studies, or for instance, a student interested in administrative and management positions could take core courses in Business Management coupled with Computer Information Systems courses. Electives in Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Business Management and Legal Studies might be appropriate for either of these examples. In order to graduate with this degree, a student must have an approved written learning plan including concentration area on file in the Advising, Career, and Transfer Services Office. The plan must be developed in collaboration with a Faculty Advisor or an Academic Division Dean and include courses from the Technical/Professional electives and Technical/Professional core courses listed below. Harford Community College Procedural Guidelines Associate of Applied Science in Technical / Professional Studies (TPS) Degree STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Meet with a faculty advisor to discuss his/her educational/career plans, develop areas of concentration, and complete the proposed Educational Plan. 2. Complete a written career/educational goal statement (Educational Plan Essay form) that articulates the student’s plans and how the TPS degree fits into those plans. 3. Make an appointment with the appropriate Division Dean to discuss his/her career objective and how TPS degree helps to fulfill that objective. 4. Provide a copy of the Educational Plan Essay form, the Educational Plan form and a current (unofficial) transcript to the Division Dean. FACULTY ADVISOR’S ROLE: 1. Meet with a student upon request to discuss his/her educational plans and review the requirements of the TPS degree. 2. If necessary, advise a student to complete a Change of Academic Intent form, to be submitted to Records & Registration. 3. Complete section 1 (General Education courses) and section 2 (Physical Education courses) of the Educational Plan form. 4. In collaboration with the student, identify the courses that may tentatively fulfill section 3 (Core Technical/Professional courses) and section 4 (Technical Professional Elective courses). 5. Send a synopsis of the student’s situation to the appropriate Division Dean. DIVISION DEAN’S ROLE: 1. Meet with the student to review his/her plans. 2. Determine the appropriateness of the student’s request and work with the student to develop a plan of study if the student’s plans fit the requirements of the TPS degree. 3. Contact the advisor or records and registration office with any questions related to the materials provided. 4. Send the approved TPS forms to the Director for Advising, Career and Transfer Services, located in the Student Center. 5. Maintain a file for the student that includes the Educational Plan, the student’s Educational Plan Essay, and any other supporting materials such as academic transcripts. ACADEMIC ADVISOR’S ROLE: 1. Explain the TPS degree to the student. 2. Discuss General Education courses with the student. 3. Refer student to appropriate Dean. 4. Review completed, signed TPS plan. If the plan does not meet degree requirements, refer back to Dean. Upon approval of plan, forward to Registration and Records. OFFICE OF REGISTRATION AND RECORDS’ ROLE: 1. Evaluate student’s transcripts as usual. 2. Provide copies of student’s transcript and supporting documentation to Division Dean as needed. 3. Once a student has filed for graduation, complete a degree audit, and inform student of the results. In order for the College to assist you in designing your program of study, you will need to outline your tentative plans in a short essay (100-200 words) in the space provided below.
