It is an immense pleasure for me to give a report on the activities of Mizoram University
Alumni Association (MIZUAA) which has been established under The Mizoram University Act,
2000.
The History:
Even though the MZU Act & Statutes provided for the establishment of Alumni
Association, there has been no initiative taken for the same for a long time. Due to certain issues
arising in the University, some alumni (ex-students) of the University convened a Meeting on the
21st May 2010 at the Office Chamber of the current General Secretary at Chanmari, Aizawl. The
Meeting decided to form Ex-Students’ Association of Mizoram University (ESAM) as a forerunner
and Steering Body for establishment of the Alumni Association. It was further resolved that when
an Official Alumni Association comes into existence, this ESAM should be automatically dissolved.

The Ad Hoc Office Bearers informed the University Authorities that ESAM came into
existence and further requested them to take immediate action for the formation of Alumni
Association. Since the Alumni Association has been provided for in the MZU Acts & Statutes which
was passed by the Parliament, its formation should be done officially under the guidance of
University Authorities. Accordingly, the University also took necessary action, Mizoram University
Cell on Alumni Association Advisory Committee was formed and it is headed by Prof. P. Rinawma,
Dean, School of Earth Science as the Chairman and Prof. Lalrintluanga, Head, Dept. of Public
Administration as the Coordinator. The Coordinator was assisted by Departmental Coordinators.
The MZU Cell on Alumni Association took immediate action, convened a meeting of the
passed out students of MZU to form an Alumni Association on the 27th October 2011 (at 1:30 p.m.)
at the Golden Hall of Hrangbana College. The formation of Ad hoc Body of Mizoram University
Alumni Association took a concrete shape with the election of its Office Bearers.

In pursuance of the resolutions passed by the Departmental Coordinators’ meeting held
on 13.10.2011 which had been ratified by the Advisory Committee of MZU Cell on Alumni
Association in its meeting held on 21.10.2011, the following terms of reference have been given to
the newly formed Ad hoc Body of the Association:
1.
The Ad hoc Body of the Association should convene the General Body Meeting of the
Alumni Association to approve its Draft Constitution.
2.
The Ad hoc Body of the Association should convene the General Body Meeting to elect
the Office Bearers and Executive Members of the Association on or before 31.11.201 for
submission to the MZU Coordinator of Alumni Association.
Since the Official Alumni Association was being formed, the so called ESAM was
automatically dissolved.
The Constitution:
Drafting of the Constitution was done by the General Secretary of the Ad hoc Body,
carefully taking a look at the MZU Acts & Statutes, and the Ordinances and not to clash with the
Laws of the University. The Draft Constitution was laid down on the Executive Meeting of the Ad
hoc Body, and was deliberately discussed upon. The Executive Committee approved it after
making slight modifications, and laid down the approved one at the General Body Meeting (the
highest authority in the functioning of the Association). The General Body Meeting approved and
adopted the Draft Constitution as the Constitution of MZU Alumni Association after making slight
modification on the 6th December 2011.
1st General Body Meeting:
The General Body (GB) is the highest authority in the functioning of the Association. The
1st General Body Meeting (GBM) of MZU Alumni Association was held on the 6th December 2011
(Tuesday) 12:00 Noon at I & PR Auditorium, Aizawl. Prof. R. Lalthantluanga, Hon’ble Vice
Chancellor, MZU, graced the function as Chief Guest. The Meeting was presided over by Mr.
Emanuel Lalhriatzuala, President of the Ad hoc Body.
The GBM approved and adopted the Draft Constitution as a Constitution for the MZU
Alumni Association after discussion and deliberations and making slight modifications. It also

approved “MIZUAA” as an official abbreviated form of the name of the Association. The Meeting
passed one Resolution which reads:
“Memorandum be submitted to the University Authorities to put forward an amendment
Proposal for Section 38 (3) of the Statutes of Mizoram University Acts & Statutes.”
The Meeting also approved 27th October as the Rising Day of MIZUAA.
Famous Singers who are the alumni of the University like Debbie Lalnunhlu-i Ralte, Gracy
VL Pachuau, Vanlalpari (Youth Icon Star) and the guest artistes namely Andrew Laltlankima and
Zualboihi (Mizo Idol Star) entertained the august gathering. Grand Dinner was served for all the
participants after Election to the Office Bearers took place.
Election to the Office Bearers of the Association was conducted in the General Body
Meeting and it was presided over by Prof. Lalrintluanga, Head, Dept. of Public Administration &
Coordinator of MZU Cell on Alumni Association as Returning Officer. The Returning Officer was
assisted by two Polling Officers namely Prof. O. Rosanga, Professor, Dept. of History &
Ethnography, and Dr. Victor Z. Ralte, Associate Professor, Dept. of Geology.

clause mentioned hereinabove makes a provision for appointment of the Vice-Chancellor, MZU as
the Ex-Officio Patron; the Registrar, MZU as the Ex-Officio Senior Adviser; the Dean of Students’
Welfare, MZU and Coordinator, MZU Cell for Alumni Association as the Ex-Officio Advisers of the
Association.
2nd General Body Meeting :
The 2nd General Body Meeting of the Association was held on the 29th June 2013
(Saturday) at the Information & Public Relations Department’s Auditorium, Aizawl. The function
was chaired by the President, Mr. Emanuel Lalhriatzuala Ralte. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of
MZU, Prof. R. Lalthantluanga and the Registrar of MZU, Mr. C. Zothankhuma, IDAS graced the
function as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour Respectively.
As many as 76 (seventy six) Group ‘A’ Gazetted Officers under the Central & State
Government who passed out from MZU were felicitated in this GBM, and they received framed
and laminated Citation from the hands of the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour. Certain
Amendments to the Constitution were also passed by the GBM.
The GBM elected Office Bearers of MIZUAA for the year 2013-2015 which was conducted
by Prof. Lianzela, Dept. of Economics, MZU as Returning Officer. The Returning Officer was

Note : As provided in our Constitution, one member each (if nominated) from

Information has been given to the Departmental Alumni Associations to nominate one
member each to represent their respective Association in the Executive Committee of
MIZUAA.
Other Activities:
ESAM issued a Press Release in the mid 2010 while some state-wide students’
organization hampered the recruitment of teaching faculty in the University. ESAM strongly
condemned the interference of organisations not directly attached to the University in the
University matters. Some members of ESAM published articles in the local newspapers in support
of the University and this also changed the attitude of the common people.
ESAM again issued Press Release on 23rd October 2010 blaming the activities of putting
out fire on the Registrar’s official car by some students of the University. ESAM Leaders
immediately invited one of the newly elected Leaders of MZUSU for a meeting. In the meeting, the
agitation was discussed and the ESAM Leaders expressed that they are strongly against those kind
of strike or demonstration with violence and damage to the University property. They advised the
new leaders of MZUSU to organise agitation (if necessary) peacefully and without violence even
when there is any issue in the future.
As invited, the Alumni Members attended Interaction with VC Search Committee held on
the 14th March 2011 at I&PR Conference Hall, Aizawl. Here, Memorandum was submitted to the
Search Committee which contained 12 (twelve) Points of the Alumni’s Proposal and Suggestions
for selection of new Vice Chancellor for Mizoram University.
MIZUAA issued Press Release on 12th April 2012 congratulating Prof. RL Thanmawia,
Controller of Exams, MZU as Prof. Thanmawia received Padma Shree Award.
MIZUAA issued another Press Release on 28th April 2012 congratulating our Member, Mr.
Lalchhantluanga (Machhana), who authored a novel “Zodinpuii” which is a recipient of Mizo
Academy of Letter’s “Book of the Year” Award. Unfortunately, Mr. Machhana has passed away
before witnessing the grand success of his novel. In the same Press Release, MIZUAA also
congratulated Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte, Dept. of Mizo, who was selected and appointed to be
the Principal of Serampore College (University). Almost all the Theological Colleges and
Institutions in India are affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College (University), and Prof.
Khiangte functions as a Vice Chancellor.

MIZUAA Leaders met the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. R. Lalthantluanga at his Office
Chamber twice on 28th November 2011 and 5th August 2012 respectively. The Leaders discussed
with the Vice Chancellor, some important matters relating to the University, infrastructure,
examination, students’ welfare, alumni welfare, etc.
As invited, the MIZUAA Leaders and Members use to attend and participate in various
programmes organised by MZUSU namely Freshers’ Social, Parting Social, Inferno, Varsity Week
Closing Function, etc. They have also attended official functions of the University like Convocation,
Seminar, etc. They sometimes delivered speech in some programmes on the topics which can
motivate and inspire students.
Felicitation:
As per the resolution passed by the Executive Committee of MIZUAA, as much as 76
(seventy six) Group ‘A’ Gazetted Officers who passed out from Mizoram University were felicitated
with citation on the occasion of the 2nd General Body Meeting held on 29th June 2013 at I & PR
Auditorium, Aizawl. Firstly, the Executive Committee intended to felicitate much more alumni who
are successful in various fields with a view that the felicitation may give inspiration and motivation
to the students of MZU and to aware the people about the quality of MZU, but decided to
felicitate only the Group ‘A’ Gazetted Officers directly recruited under the State Government and
Central Government for the time being.

Subscription:
The Rates of Subscription (Membership) as provided in the By-Laws Section 4 (i-iii) of the
Constitution, are as follows:
i)
Rs. 200.00 (Term)* and Rs. 500.00 (Life) for Alumni living in India at the time of
application and Teachers/Ex-teachers of MZU
ii)
US$ 30.00 (Term)* and US$ 50.00 (Life) for overseas Alumni.
ii)
Rs. 200.00 for Associate Life Members.
*Term means a term of Office Bearers.
It is the duty and obligation of all the passed out students of the University to enroll
themselves as a Member of MIZUAA and are all welcomed. As provided in the Section 5.2 of the
Rules & Regulations of the Constitution, all members of the teaching staff of MZU who are not
Alumni of MZU, working on regular basis, shall be eligible for Associate Membership of the
Association. The President and the General Secretary of the Mizoram University Students’ Union
(MZUSU) shall be the Ex-Officio Associate Members of the Association.
