The URLS Protection Cartridge provides 10 pairs of on-board primary over-voltage protection for the indoor/outdoor URLS10 terminal blocks. Since the protection cartridge mates
on the rear of a URLS10 block it can be included at the initial configuration or installed in
the field. Rear access protection also permits full usage of the URLS termination and test
features without removing the protection.

The URLS Protection Cartridge incorporates balanced 3-element gas tube technology to
provide high current handling and superior bandwidth of 8-10 times the capability of solid
state devices. The balanced feature provides instantaneous tip/ring response to transient
and transverse voltages. The gas tube is compatible with ±190 volt systems and includes
a fail-safe mechanism, which operates under sustained or high current power cross conditions to permanently short the line to ground.

Like the URLS10 the protection cartridge mounts to industry standard U-frames and can
also be rod mounted. A 10-pair cartridge or individual protectors can be replaced without
disrupting pair service.
Application
The URLS protection cartridge combined with the URLS10 (dry) or URLS10S (sealed)
terminal blocks provides a compact, high density protected IDC distribution solution.
This solution reduces the space required by a traditional 5-pin protector block wired to a
distribution block by 50%. The URLS10/URLS protection cartridge can be used in a variety
of indoor and outdoor applications, including distribution terminals, building entrance,
remote electronic and DSLAM equipment, or virtually any application that requires primary protection and distribution.
