Regional HOST Achievement Award. Many Region 6 employees are meeting and helping both business and recreation visitors every day in the best tradition of public service. Annually, the Regional Office will select and honor an individual or work group in the Region whose actions and approach to the job best represent the spirit of the Forest Service HOST program. The Regional HOST Achievement Award will consist of an official plaque, a cash award, and shall be featured in the Regional Greensheet Newsletter. One nomination shall be made from each Forest and the Regional Office units, by previously selecting a recipient from the Unit's own HOST Achievement Award. Nominees must be Forest Service employees, not volunteers or persons from other employment programs. Nominations are to be made in the form of a letter to the Regional Forester and submitted on or before December 1 of each year. The letter should provide the reasons the Unit feels their nomination best exemplifies the spirit of the Forest Service HOST program. Constant high-quality performance, or special actions, or both, are valid reasons for nomination. Consideration for HOST awards should not be limited to contacts with Forest visitors. The HOST program encourages quality performance in all contacts with the public and with fellow employees. Employee's performance in contacts with contractors, job seekers, fellow workers, or other Government agencies, in short, any public contact, should not be overlooked. A panel of judges from throughout the Region will select the person or group to receive the award. This panel will consist of two Forest Supervisors, two Regional Office Directors, and a District Ranger. Their judgment will be based on the information in the nominating letters. The award winner will be announced during January. 2. Primitive Skills Award. This Regional and national award is to be given to the Forest Service employee (or employees) who shows the greatest initiative, imagination, and commitment to wilderness principles by accomplishing a difficult or challenging management job or activity with primitive skills or tools within a wilderness. To qualify, such jobs or activities must be of the type where under R6 SUPPLEMENT 6109.13-96-1 EFFECTIVE 01/15/96 6109.13, 30 Page 3 of 3 normal situations (outside of wilderness) they would have been done using modern methods or equipment. a. Objectives of this award are: (1) To surface examples which will serve as guideposts or challenges to all managers. (2) To give public visibility to and appreciation for the kinds of skills employed on a daily basis by Forest Service wilderness managers. (3) To set the example for wilderness users. b. Criteria--to be used by a panel of judges to select a winner: (1) Difficulty or challenging nature of the task.
