22.6 – Options
GPS Every fire must be GPS’ed with a resource grade GPS unit (i.e.: Trimble Geo) using the
fire data dictionary and a shape file created. This shape file is copied to
J:\fsfiles\office\FACTS_Spatial_Data\FIRE\zoneX\cyX.
The Zone GIS Specialist or a fire data editor then incorporates it into the SDE corporate data set.

CHAPTER 22 - PREPARING FORM FS-5100-29, INDIVIDUAL FIRE REPORT
The naming convention for shape files of prescribed fires is to use the assigned FACTS id.* For
wildfires the first 6 digits are the Region, Forest, and District numbers. The next 3 digits will be
the SO fire number** then 2 digits for the calendar year. If the shape file is an ignition point, end
the name with pt. This is what each name should end up looking like:

*FACTS id’s are assigned in conjunction with the District NEPA Coordinator.
**SO fire numbers are issued by the Forest Dispatcher
For non-statistical fires a district number is used. There will not be an SO number. In the
field of the attribute table ‘LOCAL_NUMBER’ put an NS instead of a P code.
Feature classes are now a Forest wide extent rather than by FMZ. Layers (*.lyr) of SDE Feature
classes are filed in the GIS library at G:/gis/FIRE. The .lyr is used for display and analysis
purposes. The source data, used for editing, is in SDE in the Fire_Management feature dataset.
There are separate feature classes for wildfire polygons, wildfire point of origin, and prescribed
fire polygons.
Direction from R9 is to have all fire reports from the previous fiscal year entered in to
FIRESTAT by the first week of December and all fire reports from the previous calendar year
entered by January 15th of the next calendar year. Shape files will be placed in the appropriate
directory no later than the dates required by the FIRESTAT schedule but preferably within two
weeks of the date the fire occurred. The GIS feature class updates will be completed on a
schedule complimentary to the FIRESTAT schedule. GIS updates will be done no later than
December 15th and January 31st respectively but preferably are done throughout the year as the
fires occur.
