Background
Recent advancements in bacterial systematics have expanded the
understanding of the microbial diversity. The data generated thus finds
implications in biotechnological research. This workshop includes
lectures, demonstrations and hands-on experience to faculty members
from Colleges /Universities, PhD students, Post-doctoral fellows, etc. in
isolation and characterizing the bacterial communities using both
conventional and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies.
What you will learn
Reagents and Media Preparation, Serial dilution, Plating techniques,
Functional screening – Gridding and patching, Biochemical Identification
of Microorganisms, DNA extraction, Gel electrophoresis, Polymerase
chain reaction (16S), Gene sequencing, Analyses of DNA sequence-data Troubleshooting DNA sequencing, BLAST, Phylogenetics, Metagenomics,
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)- Chemistry and Applications, NGS
Resources, Understanding FASTQ files, Raw Data analysis - Preprocessing
like QC, Trimmimg, etc., NGS based Metagenomic Analysis - OTU
classification, Identification and Diversity analysis, NGS based Functional
Analysis - Gene prediction and functional annotation.

About us:
nd
Mizoram University was established on 2 July 2001
as a Central University (accredited by NAAC as “A
Grade”). The objectives of the University is "to disseminate
and advance knowledge by providing instructional and
research facilities, to make provisions for integrated courses
in humanities, natural and physical & social sciences,
forestry and other allied disciplines in the educational
programmes of the University; to take appropriate measures
for promoting innovations in teaching-disciplinary studies
and research; to educate and train man-power in the
development of the state of Mizoram; and to pay special
attention to the improvement of the social and economic
conditions and welfare of the people of the State, their
intellectual, academic and cultural development".
The Department of Biotechnology was established in
the year 2007. The department offers a two year M. Sc.,
Degree Course in Biotechnology. Doctoral programme
leading to Ph.D. is also being offered at the department. The
department is undertaking research projects and has
attracted funds from various agencies such as DBT, DST,
CSIR and UGC. The State Biotech Hub Facility was
established by the DBT, New Delhi in the year 2011 and has
state of art facility for research and teaching. The significant
contribution of the State Biotech Hub, Mizoram University is
especially through funding and providing cutting edge
equipments for research which has helped diverse research
projects on areas like microbial, plant, animal and human.
Free access is provided to any researcher or student form
within the state of Mizoram and neighbouring states for
carrying out their research efficiently.
Mizoram falls under the ‘Eastern Himalayas’ & Aizawl
is the state capital. It is situated at an altitude of 900 meters
