Aizawl . India INFORMATION BROCHURE Preamble “North East Region of India” comprises of contiguous states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura along with Sikkim is gifted with diverse agroclimatic conditions suitable for growing to various cash crops, fruits and vegetables. Agriculture is the main occupation for majority of the populace in this region and experts opine that horticulture is an important sector that is a major contributor to the economies of these states. Food processing industry especially agrohorticultural based has been identified as a thrust area of development. Fruits and vegetables, like banana, pineapple, orange, papaya, lemon, potato, sweet potato, tapioca chillies, turmeric, onion, ginger, bamboo shoot and jack fruit, have good marketing scope in this region if properly harvested, processed and packaged. As of now there are only a few small scale food processing units operating in the region. The existing food processing units mainly produce like Pickles, Squashes & Juices, Jam & Jelly and some other confectionary items most of which are sold within the region. Bulk of the regions demand for processed food is met by imports from other parts of the country. Therefore, it is inherent to develop food processing industries in the region to utilize its vast potential of raw horticultural produce. Government of India is trying hard to bring change in the area through its various financial assistance schemes through various Ministries and State Governments. Some of the Union Government Ministries and departments having processed food related schemes in the North East region are MoFPI, MSME, DoNER, QCI, NHB, SFAC, NERAMAC, APEDA, NABARD, etc. There is a lack of awareness about schemes among agro commodities producing groups and the prospective entrepreneurs. There is also lack of proper hand holding for the perspective entrepreneurs. Perhaps this is one of the main reasons behind the low level of development of Food Industries in the North East region. With this backdrop, ASSOCHAM & MIZORAM UNIVERSITY are jointly organizing this awareness conference for Processed Food Entrepreneurs in the North East region. The conference shall be hosting speakers from states governments, MoFPI, MSME, DoNER, NHB, SFAC, QCI, NERAMAC, APEDA, NABARD, leading banks, etc. who shall be entailing their schemes in details. Post conference, KVKs and state governments shall be providing handholding to the perspective entrepreneurs for tapping financial and technical supports for establishing units. OBJECTIVES: To create awareness about Government (Union and States both) supported schemes/programs for the small/budding/tiny processed food entrepreneurs. The schemes of NHB, NABARD, MoFPI, DoNER and SFAC will be covered extensively. To extend hand holding to the budding entrepreneurs to convert them to beneficiaries of the Government schemes To discuss overview of the processed food market with focus on opportunities for North-Eastern states To discuss key issues and challenges faced by the existing food manufacturers To build networking and fruitful collaborations with other players from the industries and govt.
